many years ago i used worked on fuel lorries in the forces, back in those days i used to smoke, we always had fag on and ditch it into the fuel when finished but only during winter

But how do you protect the fueling stations against radio/tv broadcast with 10^6 more electromagnetic energy?Ferrit wrote:Just covering themselves against a lawsuit or are they working on the real physics that radio waves do create currents in metal which can in rare occasions create sparks.

Re: Over 15lt fil up ?
Simple physics tells you that when you increase the distance from the source of the transmission its power falls off by the square of the distance, The reason they use gigawatt transmitters for tv. At I say, the vehicle is normally grounded. However you may not be with modern soled shoes and the phone can create a current in anything on you that is metallic creating a spark anywhere. Get the right mix of fuel and air and boom.....it is possible, though unlikely. But it is unlikely that you will be hit by lightning but it happens all the time.alicethomas wrote:But how do you protect the fueling stations against radio/tv broadcast with 10^6 more electromagnetic energy?Ferrit wrote:Just covering themselves against a lawsuit or are they working on the real physics that radio waves do create currents in metal which can in rare occasions create sparks.

Re: Over 15lt fil up ?
And how much distance is between the fuel nozzle and a CCS power outlet (850V DC 125A or 450V AC 63A) at the same station?
Not to mention the human operator himself, who can create sparks in the x00V range just through friction of his shoes.
A LiIon Accu of a mobile phone has typically 3.6V DC. Secondary voltage can rarely exceed millivolt.
OK in theory everything is possible. But first we should ban 12/24V car electric and high voltage hybrid cars and standard 400V power outlets and ...

Re: Over 15lt fil up ?
Back to the original point, My s-wing has a quoted 9 ltr fuel tank but I know my tank is larger than 9 litres, but its designed to hold 9 ltrs of fuel and states in the manual not to fill up too much. I've got plently of space left when the petrol pump "clicks".
P.S. the whole mobile phone thing is a myth I'm pretty sure there have been no fires caused by them at petrol stations and they do not cause static discharges.

Re: Over 15lt fil up ?
Some important things are being overlooked chaps:
Fuel pumps contain electronics. They can be "encouraged to miscalculate" the fuel delivery and price etc when subjected to radio transmissions.
Before you go out and try it, you could wind up paying more instead of less (or kill a useful safety feature)
Safety and security have a wider meaning than we are allowing for
There are a lot of nutters out there and I don't want to give them ideas by explaining too much.
You can ignite petrol with a mobile phone sized transmitter, I've seen it done (while working with electronic warfare wizards, not in a petrol station)
But the transmitter was very close to two small metal components that had an air gap in between contains fuel vapour.
Possible but unlikely.
Dropping some phones can cause the battery to spring free or jump in its holder and give a spark if they are dipped/knocked.
Static is a much bigger, very real threat.
"Myth Busters" on the TV is entertainment, not to be confused with actual science
