For what I use mine for and the mileage. It's not worth me spending a fortune on a scoot. Some days I do doubt the value of me having one these days for how much it costs me.

To be honest I'll prob keep the X9 for quite a while. I've spent a few bob on it and most things that need doing have been done. It's better the devil you know.

Meldrew youve got it about right and agree we often let the heart rule the head when it come s to new bike purchases . With me i have always used a bike for my main transport through choice and my choices have not always been the most practical or reliable to be truthful . From the mid 90`s to 2007 i did buy a lot of new bikes because at that time i was a lot better off . I did loose money on new bikes mainly because of the milage i put on them and i would say to the tune of 40% most of the time ,however i never lost on any ex demo or used machine and most of the time i gained a few quid , my honda 1000 i got exactly what i paid for it 30 months later . Looking at the bike dealers atm i see some big losses as they are slashing some prices and willing to haggle . I never now pay what a dealer wants and always walk out with at least the next service chucked in the deal . Now that i have been on the srv nearly 2 years i dont feel the need to change , its done all i have asked and any issues have been fixed relatively pain free and i think it will only be any further deterioration in my health that would dictate a change or i could add a side winder to the srv if i can find one .

Meldrew,

I thought for minute that you were talking about me! Yes, I thought that a new bike made me happy when in fact, at certain times over the years that new bike (and all the new kit that went on the bike or my body) was a void filler, a filip, a pick-me-up. Went through the GS and Dakar phase and BMW hype, around Europe too. Looking back, the rides and courier jobs I had on my cheap CX500B (comstar wheels) and the pure fun on my 2nd hand ZX6 beats all the shiny new bikes and kit and chasing that elusive something that I threw my money at.

Maybe its called youth or getting older or poorer, or wiser.

I'm not bitter about all the money I spent at all (I could be living mortgage free by now I reckon!!), no I'm not, but I cant see myself going back to a bike. I am enjoying the practicalities of scootering now - I bloody love it in fact, and relish sitting on me Vision 110 and scooting off somewhere, I'll hang onto it, no flash harry, no flash kit no bloated ego or shrunken wallet.

I gotta go, I'm welling up here. Happy memories though and in my blood I know. Is my Burg 400 a keeper, after what I said above? Fantastic scoot though it is, No! I'm happy on my Vision 110 for now and smug with my memories.

Mind you, I'm dreaming of another scoot for further afield, but it can wait a while longer.

2003 Piaggio X9 250SL (Nov 2011-)
2002 Aprillia Leonardo 250 (July 2008 - Nov 2011) - Sold for £25 more than I paid for it
2004 Piaggio B125 (July 2007 - July 2008) - Sold for £200 less than I paid for it.
2005 Peugoet Ludix (March 2005 - July 2007) - Sold for £200 less than I paid for it.

Total Depreciation is £425. Not bad for 9 years. The X9 has to be worth about the same or a little less than I paid for it.

Mind you the garage bills over the years don't bear thinking about. The X9 has had plenty of cash spent on it such as stator issues, sticky calliper, belt, rollers, sliders, new head bearings, two new tyres, two new air filters, many oil changes, and a new exhaust

I went through the GS and Dakar phase too, on the old Airhead ones in 1990-1994 first with a R80 GS,then a R100 GS PD. I really liked it's big 7.5 gallon plastic tank and back then it didn't cost a fortune to fill it. I fitted a large Parabellum touring screen from the US, a lower front mudguard, and bought a load of GS bits from Wüdo in Dortmund on a ride there. I bought the mandatory BMW System helmet there too, every good BMW Club member had to wear one like it was some unwritten rule, even if it was the crap System 3 I bought it still aced the System 2 and even older System 1 wearers at rallies and camping weekends. I've still got a pair of new barely used Wüdo pannier top bags in a box in my garage along with the stuff from my biker days.

I spent more on GS bits on a ride to Wunderlich when they had a shop in Bad Neuenahr- Ahrweiler. I bought a pair of retro BMW alloy valve covers that had an oil filler cap on one of them, you could top up the oil there but only very slowly. I also bought a pair of under cylinder foot flaps and other 'cool' to me stuff.'

I also blew a £500 work bonus on one of those expensive red and grey BMW Gore-tex riding suits because it matched my red System helmet just so I could look like another BMW Club clone. I take some comfort from the fact I moved on to another fad before I succumbed to fitting a set of those big biscuit tin panniers. Nowadays I think my GS years were my Mid- Life Crisis years and a lot more riders are doing the same thing now, thanks to Ewan and Charlie!

I did all of that also Meldrew but i didn't stop until after the Biscuit tin panniers
Then i saw the light...
