Re: Is this possible ?
It really depends on the disability. I have no control of my right foot, I cannot know what position it is in and the knee is to weak to support the bike. I used to ride geared bikes many years ago when you could ride 250 on L plate so never got a licence. Many years later returning to bikes I rode for 2 years on a geared 125 for commuting in london but as the leg got worse it was impossible to ride with the gears, even if I adapted to a rear brake lever, I could not support the bike with the right leg meaning I always had to have the bike in gear as I could not move gears when stationary. So when somebody suggested a scooter and I met John Thompson I found I could ride much easier, as I moved out of london I needed a larger bike and therefore chose to take my test on an automatic as I do not envisage ever riding geared bikes again.Steve_D wrote:Thanks. I'm sure you can find anything you want on the net but like I said, I'VE never seen one. Nice examples of disabled riders riding manual motorcycles there which reinforces my original comment. None of them have resorted to an automatic motorcycle because of their disability. Plenty of skill and confidence in abundance there.
It is the same reason I drive an automatic car, I can only drive with my left leg....not easy to use 3 pedals with 1 leg

Now before anybody answers that, remember that he might have a disability that benefits from bubbles and extravagant dining!spaceprobe wrote:Would you mind if I had champagne?
Several members on here have mentioned their disabilities brought them to maxidom and/or can be seen in posted pics
I've met at least one muppet with a leg missing and a few that have been pinned back together or have dodgy joints etc
Mr Angry is involved with NABD and has posted about that too

I just took the test so that I could ditch the L plates and carry a pillion if I wanted to. Plus my insurance would be cheaper. I never intended to go up from that. I took my test on a 125 geared bike though - it's hardly rocket science to use a clutch and gears so why restrict yourself - it's not any more expensive to learn or take a test on a geared bike, is it? After about a year I got a Honda SH300. Two years after passing my test it automatically allowed me to ride 'big bikes'. Got a Burgman 650, thinking I'd NEVER be interested in a geared bike. Earlier this year I chopped the Burgman in for a FJR 1300. Could never had done that if I'd took my test on an automatic. Have a go at me if you like but personally, I think that people who take tests in/on automatic cars or bikes lack the confidence and skill to drive/ride on the road and should consider whether they are fit to do so if dealing with a clutch and gears is too much for them. There, I said it!SOLO wrote:auto licence----- ride any automatic you like
Maual licence--- ride any manual bike & automatic bike you like.
If with a FULL automatic licnece you want to ride a manula bike you will have to ride a manual bike as a learner, 125 and l-plates and CBT lol
So i could have a CBT and a 125 manual l-plate bike....roll in to the drive swap bike over and jump on a 650 automatic and take a passanger and shot down the mortorway lol ...well thats how it works with owning a Full auto licence, sucks but still lets you ride a manaul on learn
And we all know how good all manual bike and car drivers are at driving they are all amazing, what a load of rubbish, if someone wants to take a test on an auto its up to them doesn't mean they are unconfident and crap at driving

And to my young friends that tell me I am sad, I dont give a shitjamie wrote:i cant workout why anybody would want a manual car

Re: Is this possible ?
Riding or Driving manual in the UK is generally considered a necessity and automatic a luxury that has limitations... in the States and it will be the opposite, from experience. The UK is quite unique in this attitude, I am being encouraged on all side to take my car test in a manual car so I can have a choice when I pass... I don't find an auto gearbox lacking and I don't see the benefit of a manual being enough to make me need to have 'The Choice'. My wife's Toyota iQ's auto gear box enables you to increase by 1000rpm to help initial acceleration from a standing start or going up hill and also enables you to reduce down by 1000rpm to enable better engine braking for down hill or other occasions that require a 'lower gear'.
Driving or Riding with an auto transmission does not make you any less skilled or less confident, in fact in learning to drive it will only increase your confidence because you don't have the worry of fluffing a gear change or stalling in the middle of a junction.

Re: Is this possible ?
Automatic car sales are on the increase in the UK so I expect we will slowly follow the US trend. The only thing with having a manual licence it makes it easier and cheaper to rent a car especially in places like Spain and Italy etc
