Used Scooter Frenzy!

Post by Sgt Ernie Bilko »

In the last two days I've sold 2 x Sym Jet 4 50's, 1 x Jet 4 125, Honda Dylan 125, Yamaha Xmax 250, Piaggio Liberty 125, Daelim Bonita and possibly a GTS250!

I'm now nearly out of quality used scooter stock!!!

Interestingly, my Suzuki dealer says he is selling Burgmans hand over fist, mostly 400Z ABS models, and mostly to guys chopping in their big bikes like I did. There is much truth in this economy thing. Scooters pretty much reign supreme and boy the fun you have in the process :D !!

But scooters are not that much cheaper to run unless its a 125 and even then one of those are not cheap £1-4k and then there is the servicing.

It probably depends what you are comparing it too. My Burgman, although not yet fully run in is giving me a genuine 74-76mpg between 55-60mph with overall mixed running on country and some town roads. I'm told that it will probably continue to give good mpg as long as I don't ring it's neck all the time. It's £35pa road tax as you know, and servicing even at the dealer isn't that costly compared to my Vstrom or Car. My Vstrom managed 36-38mpg all the time even on a long run (I'm afraid I drove it on private roads all the time at higher speeds) and dropped below 34mpg in town all the time. Tax on it was £74pa. Now my car, the latest Skoda Fabia diesel estate is £30pa road tax, and does overall 60mpg in general running around and 74-76mpg on a run (yes...that the true figure). But buying the car is a lot of money, but you get good returns. The Burgman is pretty cheap to buy new or used and gives equally good returns and is cheaper overall to run than my car or Vstrom ever was, and insurance is cheaper too than either the car or Vstrom. You can argue the car gives more comfort, can carry more passengers of course, but for personal transport I think scooters are brill. It's when you start buying twin cylinder engined scooters you tend to lose the economy advantages, but then you gain more performance I guess which for some is much more important.

My Burgman vs my wifes Peugeot 107s costs.

Cost to buy.... Burgman 400 £5615 Pug 107 £6986

Annual service. £170 £99

Road tax £35 £0

MPG average 71mpg average 55mpg

So, not enough in it for me to swap for a small car, also take into account that the big service on the scoot is nearly £500 and the scoot depreciates faster than the 107. Plus factor in tyres, our last 107 needed 1 tyre in 30,000 miles.... the scoot will I reckon need at least 4 rears and 2 fronts.

Scooters arent cheap to run at all compared to a small car like my wifes.

You're right, if it's cost saving you need to stick with a 125, or possibly 250.

Scoot insurance can be very much cheaper than car, but unlikely to even cover the higher tyre usage/costs.

Although this new X10 350 looks interesting with potential for 80mpg & 12000 klm servicing.

In which case you'll have to do what other dealers do and dig all the tat out of the back of the workshop and polish that up!

Are you suggesting the Sarge would allow tat in his scooter/motor pool?
I wake up every morning with a smile upon my face,
My natural exuberance spills out all over the place!
