TMAX MK3 V BELT

Post by 007tmaxer »

Has anyone used a none original V Belt on a Tmax? There are some on ebay from Italy sold by BORROZZINOMOTO £46 inc postage?
Also I know you can measure the belt once the light comes on at around 13000m but how long have people managed to run the belt for? I remember having a belt explode on me on my MK1 but that was the original small teeth version.
I can also get an original from the USA for around £100 ?
New original must be over £150 now !
Regards
Steve

The original fitment on my Mk2 was changed at 16700 . I got a Yamaha one from SMC at Sheffield, it cost £92 a year ago

Clive has used non Yam belts, with no trouble as far as I know

Yep i got a non Yamaha belt fitted.......Ebay..£30.
It has been on about, er i think :? ...about 9,000 miles now,
I keep looking and checking it, as best you can on the Max, it looks in good condition as far as i can see.
Always had the nagging feeling that it would let go at some time, but it has not,
But just for my peace of mind the next one will be a Yamaha belt.

I had problems with my cheap one and my polini one, think it might have been down to the secondary sheaf

I've got a Malossi one on at the moment, which I put on with the Malossi variator. It was a little cheaper - £85. I have heard of troubles with some ultra cheap V-Belts. Some turn out to be not proper V-belts at all, but general machinery belts which don't work too well. So beware.

On previous TMaxs, I have found that that the width has been down to the specified minimum after 12000 miles. However, on the mk3, there was still quite decent life in the original belt when it was changed with the Malossi variator at around 12,500-13,000 miles. I guess it must depend on usage to an extent, but I'm not sure what sort of use prolongs or shortens belt life, except for full throttle Traffic Light drag races, which I believe wear belts.

Obviously it depends how many miles you do, but in the greater scheme of things £100 odd plus fitting every year or 2 years isn't that much of an expense, and the savings from a cheap one pretty insignificant in terms of the overall running costs. Tyres cost twice as much and only last half or even a third of the life of the V-Belt, so savings on tyres would be more significant than on a cheap V-Belt

Thanks guys
I have done 13000miles in a year! 90mile round trip to work, so every penny counts. Its mostly motorway, so I will push it another few thousand miles and try the half price one from italy.
