We went to test ride a Harley Davidson , but

Post by R1K SU »

Since we first got the Burgman, Su has thought of getting a Goldwing as it also has a comfy seat and not as fast and furious as the FZ1, so I suggested looking at Harleys, she said yes straight away, so a phone call to Preston Harley Davidson asking if a test ride was on, they said "what time can you get here" :)
We were not sure what type of bike or engine size to look at, so Pete told us to look around and "sit on all of em" to see which suited us.
Now sue is ok at getting of a bike, but with her bad back she has trouble getting off, so I usualy put it on the side stand and she slides off the side, with my help ( could be just lazy ).
She sat on the first one, saddle to narrow, next one had a riders back rest and passenger back rest..."Im never gonna fit in that gap"
We need a bike with luggage storage, so went to the Electra Glide type of bike, nice Goldwing type passenger seat with speakers and lots of gadgets, she stood up on the footpegs, but couldnt seem to get her leg over without touching the hard panniers and didnt want to scratch them, so got down again. Tried more bikes seats to narrow, not long enough ???
So we walked out without a test ride as the more she looked at them, the more she didnt like them, go figure :(
She did look at the prices and said you could get a new scooter for the price, so i did mention there was an 850 scooter now with more umph than my Burgman.
Will wait and see if she takes the bait, lol

The 1800cc are built by CVO which is Harley's Custom Vehicle Operations. These are expensive top of the range machines.

My Street Bob cost just a little more than the new BMW scoots.

The loud pipes are so they can't hear the rattles in the engine and you can't hear what they are pontificating about.

I agree that some pipes on Harley's are far too loud. I do have after market pipes on mine, but mine came with 1 & 1/2 inch baffles (probably smaller than most) which to me sound really nice and not too loud. I did a quick door knocking session with my neighbours when I first had them fitted and they all said they pipes sounded fine.
I think (personal opinion) that a 4 cylinder bike sounds far more anti social than most twins. Ducati pipes for instance is just sweet music.

You wouldn't mind Harley loud pipes quite so much if they made a nice noise, but they don't.
