My Burgman 400

Post by Data »

Lo people,

My main project is done for now. So, thought I write some stuff with the little extra time I have. I've had my 400z abs for over three and a half months now and just thought I'd make you all sick as parrots with yet another little update on what I think of it (as if you prolly don't already know as I go on about it so much!). Anyhoo, I'm pleased I made the jump from big bikes to maxi scooters, and to the Burgman in particular.

As each day goes by I find the Burgman more and more useful and a real hoot to ride. I had a 65 mile run last night to complete at dusk and it was just turning chilly. On went the heated grips (yes I was feeling a bit of a woos at the time), just medium temperature and off I went. I was on the A12 for a good bit of the run doing 70mph before turning off and meandering around Suffolks best twisties. In fact I was running late for the quick meet I had arranged, I was enjoying the ride too much and didn't keep a check on the time. I ended up winding on the power and I got to take some bends at speeds I hadn't previously experienced on the Burgman. The roads were bumpy but the bike took them all ok without trying to step out of line. I arrived at the meet point, a pub, and sunk several beers...all non-alchoholic Becks you'll be pleased to know! And I still can't get used to the fact I don't have any big wide panniers or top box on the bike, yet it took all my gear including helmet under the seat with no problem.

And that's one of the things I like most about these scooters. Ease of use. For me, my Vstrom was no where near as good or user friendly even with all it's luggage mounted. The other thing I really enjoy is the fuel economy...I get more than double the miles per gallon of my 1000cc Vstrom and the roadtax is less than half as well. Win win!

So what issues have I had with the bike so far....errrrrrrr.....none! I've only covered 2k miles in the time I've had her but she is rock solid and reliable as you would expect. No adjustments needed by the dealer or any other worring stuff. She uses no oil at all even though i tend to go fast for longish periods. The oil is starting to turning black but that's of no real concern, it should do. The engine has become noticeably more powerful as the miles have gone on and the mpg's have improved each week I've ridden her. In fact, the engine is a real gem and is ultra mechanically quiet. I like it that way. Oh...just one thing! I haven't actually had any issues as I said, but there is something that bothered me slightly. That was a fairly loud rattle, buzz from the instrument binnacle. I found if I touched and pressed lightly down on the plexiglass over the instruments the buzz, rattle stopped. My dealer said he can fix it no problem but as a temperary fix, I inserted a couple of rubber wedges between the plexiglass edge and the instrument surround plastic and it's fixed it ok.

Each time I clean the Burgman, I learn something new about her. I try to clean in all the inaccessible places and I use Waxoyl and FS365 to fend of anything evil. I've got the stuff and need to use it up before investing in that other brilliant expensive stuff you spray on (name escapes me just now) but you've all mentioned it in posts. I'll get some. When I first got her, I carefully cleaned her paintwork and coated her with two coats of 'Supagard' paint sealer. It brought on a fantastic deep shine and protects like no wax does, not even Maguires. My car has it on and it works. Is it the best? probably not as these things move forward very quickly these days. It is very very good though and I speak from 4 years of experience with it.

So, overall, very pleased indeed with it. Would I recommend one to someone else as a good alrounder...yes! Is it the best maxi scooter out there in it's class?...if not, it's very close. It is being sold as a fairly premium product in the market place and it is a bit expensive now with the lastest price hike. But it has been in continuous production for 14 years with a major update of course in 2007 and it still looks the business in my view. It has that brilliant track record for reliability, ease of maintenance, the ability to really go places with ease and to last a long time without problems! And it's cheap to run. Those are the reason I bought mine... 8-)

Thank you all for making me so welcome and for helping me to get to know my new bike, errrrr....scooter!

I have to say that there's something about the Burger that either grabs you or doesn't. I feel the same way about mine - though I bought it used with scratches and dings. It will be just one year soon since I bought it, there'll be 20,000 miles on the clock soon, about 7,000 of them mine, and there's not a single thing that I'd change. She's comfy on the highways and nimble enough on the twisties and good on gas and yes, fits comfortably on the bed between me and the wife...

Nice review Data, you do seem to love yours!

I really rate the Burgman 400, compared to my previous Xevo 400 its more comfortable, quicker off the line, smoother, far better made, has more space for me and the gear and all round a better scooter for sure. But, theres something missing.

When I had the Piaggio, I kept it immaculate, after every ride I would get the flies off etc. I took pics of it, posted loads about it on here and generally loved it. It made me grin when it shuddered off the line on full revs, and the way I could lean it over and the exhaust barked too. Dont get me wrong, I wouldnt go back to an Xevo but it had a soul, something the Burger doesnt appear to have.

Its the same with my car, a Skoda Roomster.... its brilliant at everything it does, but unlike my previous Fiats I dont love it. Seems the Italians have still got it when it comes to appealing to the heart.

Yes I do know what you mean Barry. When Mrs Data and me had our main business we had Fiat cars and vans. They were all incredibly good to drive, all the other vehicles we had didn't come close. As you know Barry I have Skoda as well and we love that too. Yet I don't keep cleaning it or doing stuff to it. It never needs anything doing apart from cleaning anyway. But I wouldn't swap it for anything as it's the most reliable, dependable car we've ever had, fun to drive etc and we've had the lot car wise. I know what mightbesane is talking about too. It's a bit like the old square volvos that you either loved or hated. I just happen to love mine and get on ok with it. I think Suzuki are about to update the Burgmans yet again next year so it's going to be fun to see what they come up with. Whatever, it will have to be good to carry on the near perfection of the existing models. ;)

If you really want to put the "icing on the cake" then pop a set of Dr Pulley 18g sliders in. They "perk up" the response and significantly drop the cruising rev's ( 70 mph = 6,000. 80 mph = 6,500 ) and amazingly don't compromise the excellent fuel economy, Trust me "Data" they are the best value addition that you can make.

Hi Data,

I just ordered a supagard sealant sponge from ebay. i'll try it on the car and tmax. Does it just need a wash and dry before application or is there anything required to apply?

I guess it's a bit like applying polish, wash, dry, apply, clean off...

Any other tips?

My dealer has just this week got a standard 400 into stock and I noticed today that it only says Burgman on the rear panels and now no 400 designation?
I looked in the 2012 shop brochure and they do not now show the standard 400 only the 400Z ABS and it's picture only shows 'Burgman'. However the website shows both models...... BUT the non ABS model in the showroom is the new Dark Moonstone which according to their website is only available in the ABS model. :?
All I can think is that Suzuki UK must be using the ABS model as a base unit and not putting the ABS and extra bits on :?:

Data does your ABS model say 400 on the rear?

Methinks this looks like clearing stock in preparation for a "New Model" introduction for 2013 but bearing in mind that Suzuki have bumped up the price of the AZ to £6,400 in what I believe to be a "softening up process" for the 2013 pricing structure (the 2013's will be all ABS) and worse still when you consider that 20% VAT is levied within that price (it will end up funding some foreign military escapade or indirectly a Spanish bailout), it will have to be pretty much off the "That's something very special scale" before I fork out. Sorry for the "RANT" but Good God am I fed up will the way things are going and how we are being governed/conned.

halfabusa, to be sure of a good seal to the paintwork, it must be wax free before applying the Supagard. I carefully used a mild paint cleaner with no abrasives in it. I had some stuff from a Maguires polish pack that removes all old wax and debris. Then I used a bottle of the paintseal cream to apply two coats of the Supagard. It was truly remarkable how deep the lustre was, and still is. It gives some minor protection against scratches and good protection against bird muck. It's best to wash the bike in the Supagard non foaming anti acid car wash. This also helps remove ground in debris and protects the finish. I haven't found the sponges to be brilliant but they do work.

Bornagain, yes my bike just has 'Burgman' on the side panels, and ABS on the front fairing on one side. As Mac says, they are using up the stock in preparation for next years new models for sure.

I've been thinking I might try the Dr Pulley 18g's sometime. Mine is revving at 6400rpm at indicated 70mph on the flat. It always settles at those revs. I put this down to the fact it is still new with no belt wear and maybe my speedo in overreading and I'm really doing 65mph...ish.

Thanks for the interesting comments so far... ;)
