Sym Citycom 300i acceleration...

Post by anonstarter »

Hi guys,

I took the SYM Citycom up the A30/A303/M3 to London (From St. Ives, Cornwall) last week and found I was wanting for a bit... more.

Yeah it does 85mph and 80mpg but human nature being what it is, I'm kinda tempted by the Burg 400cc... is there that much difference?

How long before I'm trying to justify a SRV850? :o

I thought I'd make a vid' showing the acceleration of my Sym Citycom 300i and I've wopped it up into Youtube!

What d'ya think?

I'd say Su's Xmax 250 goes about the same, maybe quicker

Looked pretty good to me for a 300. A burg 400 will have more top wack, but is probably only slightly faster on acceleration as it's much bigger and heavier. It looked to me as if the engine coolant gauge on yours was still on cold when you did all that. If so, that's not good and it won't go so well. Or maybe it was just how it looked on the vid. Nice vid though! ;)
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

Been riding for 55 years & owned too many bikes to list here...

Thanks Data,

That was the first vid' I recorded, the second one going the other way, with a slightly higher temperature, did show 90mph on the clock! :P

The Citycom is noted for its massive radiator for a 264cc. It's been suggested that it was designed with hot climates in mind and some Citycom owners have actually covered half the rad' with mouse mats etc to facilitate quicker warm up so the EFI turns the choke off sooner, thus saving fuel - especially on cold mornings! :o

The only time mine has gone up a 'segment' was after a 300 mile ride to London then across it (what a nightmare that was!).

Maybe it's time to invest in a 47p Tesco Value mouse mat!

I'm 110kg - so I'm guessing she's lighter than me! ;)

Many moons ago 'we' used to go to a place called Jeepers :D - which is a go-cart track in Hayle. I always came second/third to the lightest/skinniest rider!

I had a similiar experience to yours last saturday. I went to the air day at RNAS Yeovilton so I to travelled up/down the A30/A303 (Honition to the airbase and back). On the single lanes 50mph limit she was fine but on the dual carriageways... she lacked oomph. But still managed to stay in the second lane for a while and it was quite windy and wet. But overtaking
in some cases was very slow (though i wasn't hogging the second lane or holding up faster cars).

Personally I'd loved a 400+, but then I only really use my scoot for a 15mile commute so tbh a 400+ is a bit to much for what I need it for. If i done trips like this on a weekly basis then I would upgrade, but if its once a month or longer i'd stick with the Citycom (so i'm sticking with my GTS).
