not sure if it's true
I heard a rumour today that the government are going to change the licensing law on MP3 LT's and all Yourban scooter so you will have to pass a bike test to ride any of them. Anyone else heard this..?

Re: not sure if it's true
That would seem sensible, if you ask me. Are they allowed to? Europe might not like it...
Re: not sure if it's true
Good, and helmets should be compulsary too (and on quad bikes on public roads).
I don't blame Piaggio for taking advantage of a loophole in the law (it's about the only intelligent marketing they have done), but it's a stupid fecking law that needs to be changed. I have absolutely 0 respect for people on the LTs, they don't even need to do a CBT.
After that they need to phase in power limits for new drivers in the same vein as bikers (which I think is a good thing by the way, I'd abolish direct access too, maybe have a two stage limit, first year after pass 33bhp, year 1-2 75bhp unlimited after 2 years for example)

Re: not sure if it's true
Many of us on here never sat a CBT.
Do you not respect us too?
The law may be daft but the people who buy LTs for use on a car licence are not really that different to many of us and I say good luck to them.
They'll need it....

Re: not sure if it's true
Many of the (few) people with LT's that I have spoken to have their full bike licences anyway. Dunno why they bought the LT's but they did. It's an interesting anomaly that really I think needs fixing. At least some sort of training needs to be compulsory. The Lt's are pretty quick.+
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

Re: not sure if it's true
The bit of licence rules that puzzle me is, that some can pass there full bike licence on a 125 hand change geared scooter
then ride a big foot change motorbike which is totally different

Re: not sure if it's true
By the same token someone can pass their test on a geared motorbike then jump on a twist and go scooter which has linked brakes for a clutch and no footbrake.
At least geared scoots and bikes (mostly) have the clutch and brakes in the same place.

Re: not sure if it's true
from big bikes i had a break from them ,i then got a ride on a cousins lambretta tv175 i couldnt get used to the gears on handle bars
found it most awkward, yet my twist and go is so easy to ride,
,but i do think a motorbike takes off easier from a stand still,,dont mean speed just taking weight and moving away,

Re: not sure if it's true
It's the first time i ever agreed with a government idea. Anybody using the roads should have some sort of training and knowledge, be it by driving licence, compulsory training or whatnot. Even bicycle riders need training. Most don't even know what those lights with fancy red/amber/green are for.
Don't matter if you have a bicycle, a wheezy 50cc moped or a super sports under you. As long as you're sharing a road with other vehicles you need to know what you're doing or the life of yours and others will be in danger.

Re: not sure if it's true
Whether somebody with a fully bike licence has done a cbt or not is irrelevent as you should know Mr Pedantic.gn2 wrote:Many of us on here never sat a CBT.

You have a bike licence already so you have done the proper training and yes people who buy an LT without a bike licence get and deserve no respect for circumventing training and testing designed to keep themselves and (more importantly) other road users/pedestrians safe.
Having only a car licence does not make you fit to operate a motorcycle - even a 3 wheeled one with a foot brake.
