Vespa GT200

Evening all

So I made a stupid mistake and bought a BMW R850R.Nothing wrong with it but I cant ride it for toffee.My biker days are over but unfortunately I didnt realise it until I had bought the bloody thing and rode it for a couple of days.Anyway just sold it and I am now on the look out for something as different and retro and wondered what people thought of the GT200. I only have a fairly meagre max budget of £1500.

You would be better asking on GTS forum but should get a good one for £1500 have a good look at the seam on panels behind the front wheel that where they go .If some one is advertising saying they had it waxoyled from new should be good as they rust from inside if not garaged.Apart from that its play in engine mounts not a massive job .Get one with that hasnt been messed with engine wise most will have a stainless pipe as they go and cost less that original.Engine is good been used in Gilera runner and others so tried and tested.Id love one

mac, the Gt200 is a superb machine. But, I'd go for the vespa GTS250. It's even better and you should be able to get one for a similar price to the 200. It's a no brainer I think. It will let you cruise that bit faster and you won't use any real extra amount of fuel either. Throttle response is even better than the already fairly quick 200, so try and get a run on the 250 and see what you think. Of course, it's just my two bobs worth. Post back with your thoughts. bit late now i know but

gt200s are keeping there price now as they are becoming rarer

the gt is more tunable then the gts as it is carbed rather then injected also easyier to fix if it goes wrong

Again, just my two bobs worth and with acknowledgement to the above. If you buy the 250 it will far exceed the performance of the 200 anyway so tuning may be completely unnecessary depending on what you want. The fuel injection systems are trouble free and maintenance free, don't need setting up like a carb, and it doesn't wear out like a carb (throttle body wear accepted after millions of miles and not much different to a carb in that respect I guess). It'll only cost you pretty much the same as the 200 as well, and be a younger scoot with maybe less problems. If you want to fit an aftermarket performance pipe you can and it's sooooo...easy to set up the fuel injection to accommodate the new pipe. It can be very much trial and error with carbs. I spent years with carbs on bikes messing about tuning them. Since injection came on the scene, it's heaven. You can map both the injection system and ignition with massive ease to get her just right. But, if it's the 200 you are after for vintage type reasons then that's good enought and go for it! But the 250 is superior in lots of ways and very easy to look after. It'll cost you less in the long run too. ;)

Ah, you aren't the only one. I traded my lovely Burger in for a CBR 600 and soon found out my biker days are over too.aching wrists, awful round town, no steering lock to speak of, and you are set in race position all the time so you can't even look at the view, and no bleedin storage is a big downer. Glad it's not just me that does these things. Had it 3 weeks and got rid.
Picked up a PCX 125 to keep me going until next year when I should be able to buy a nearly new Burger [unless they bring in the bigger x10].
The PCX is great by the way, I drove it "like the vicar" for the first week as it is new, and got 139.99 MPG !!!! Obviuosly it's a bit slow, but cor blimey it's cheap to run.

scootersthefuture, wow...the pcx is a nice scoot. I see one everyday and it flys by at 60mph...two up!! Must be flat out I reckon but that's how it's designed to be ridden pretty much I guess. Yours will no doubt get quicker as time goes by. Nice one.

The PCX could be capable of so much more but it's restricted to 62.5mph which is when the limiter kicks in.
Mine will sit without complaint at 60 but it won't do 130mpg like that obviously, more like 90mpg which isn't too awful.

have you ridden both? i have had many a 200 thats as quick as a 250 standard. just depends really

the 250 is smoother, to be honest not alot extra goes wrong so i wouldnt worry unless the injector packs up

oh my first runner 200 had over 60000 on the clock. i never had an issue with the carb or the throttle at all. it helps to use a scoot often enough i suppose. i dont even think i ever took it off to clean
