Burgman 400 4000 mile service cost

My Burger is shortly due its first 4000 mile service, had a quote of £160 all in.... sound reasonable?

I suspect that's pretty good Barry. I remember my dealer telling me it was around the £150 mark but that was in February. But all this scootering stuff is new to me...now if it were a car or big bike!

Converted to dollars, that's about the same price that I paid for a full service before brakes and tires.

I'm sorry fellas, but i don't understand how you think £160 is reasonable for any service. Change the oil, 2ltres=£15. Oil filter at most=£10. If it is first service, what else needs doing apart from a visual inspection( that should be done each time you ride). Tyres shouldn't need anything , plugs should be okay, all lights and indicators-controls should work.No bearings or Belts need checking. What else are you paying £160 for??. Oh i forgot they will stamp your service book.

It's a 4000 mile service though not a first service.

£160 sounds ok to me, not as cheap to service as the Xevo though Barry

If you're going by the book, a 4,000 mile service is a bit more than an oil change and kicking the tires. I'm not saying that it's cheap, and I do most of the work myself on my used 2004 Burger at this point. But if you're starting from new and want to keep your service book in order for at least a little while, you have to pay the price.

Its a bit more than my Xevo service, and that had a lot more doing to it too. I wonder if Suzuki will remove the tranny cover and clean it all out?

According to the shop manual for my K4 - an oldie but a goodie - here's the 4,000 mile service:
Replace the engine oil, but not the filter or the gear oil. Clean and oil the air cleaner element. Clean the cooling fan filter. Inspect all lines and hoses but not the drive belt. Check idle speed, throttle play, brake fluid, plug, and valve clearances. Inspect/tighten exhaust bolts and chassis nuts and bolts.

yep, mighbesane you are about right. The newer double overhead cam motors don't need the valve clearances checked at that mileage but it's basically a big inspection service and a nuts and bolts check job. I'm not sure if they plug it in to the computer to check the ECU KAM for stored faults (if it has that function!), but they may well do that, we did that to virtually all cars coming in for service. Apart from oil, there isn't much else to pay for accept the labour and VAT. If you break down the cost into parts and labour and the VAT it sounds very reasonable to me. I'd struggle to get it done in the time Suzuki allocate but a Suzi tech will breeze through it no problem in that time. I teched on cars for 32 years and I realise dealers have to exist and not just cover costs but make a profit too. If dealers don't make a profit, then they'll fold and you won't be able to buy new scooters and parts etc a little down the line. If you work it out yourselves as to how long it would take to do the service yourself, by the book, then the cost is spot on. The technician will be looking for anything abnormal and will adjust and correct anything that isn't right. Any warranty work will be sorted either there and then or parts ordered. And the service book will be stamped as you say. Any new ECU updates for the fuel injection or ignition mapping will be applied automatically also.

There's very little there to justify 160, except the valve clearance, I suggest you specifically question the dealer before letting them do the work that the price includes the valve clearances and if they say yes ask how they can do that if not collecting in a van or keeping overnight?

Alternatively there's many that take the view the valve clearances are a complete waste until at least 12-16k miles, so if you're happy for them not to do this then sub-100 would be far more reasonable.
