Ride Outs in General

Post by Gerard C »

Having read that the Southern ride out has been cancelled and some of the comments being made I thought I would put a few observations forward.

Firstly if your interested in riding out for fun then make sure you identify where you live in your profile. Why? So that people like me and others who try to organise things can send you a PM asking if your interested. For example using this "system" I've been able to get 5 localish members together for a quick meet this Sunday. We also have each others mobiles for text contact. What this does is allow a quick get together or indeed a quick cancellation if the weather turns really shite.

I think it's true that many members of the forum use it for entertainment only, (which is fair enough), and just use the Scoot for commuting. I have the luxury of living close to work so ride everyday even if its not so good. So I like to ride at weekends on longer trips. My view is that the more formal the meet up i.e if someones put a lot of effort into promoting the thing, and you said you were going then you have a duty, if thats not too heavy a word, to turn up. It would have to be pretty bad for me not to go. My mates seem to share the same view.

I also wonder if theres sometimes a bit of self doubt - everybody will be faster, better. Mines 300 and they are on 500s or some nonsense. When I went on my first ride out I had the same thoughts. If any body does have that thinking then it is totally wrong. I learned so much from watching the Flockton Flyer and Groucherino it brought my riding up two notches.

When a bunch of Maxi Scoots turn up at a Bikers Cafe the interest shown is always high. People are impressed. I am always being asked about performance, comfort etc. So lets get out there.

What we have done up here is to create a Northern Riders group of people interested in ride outs with quick contacts. If your interested then PM me. Why doesn't someone in the South do the same thing.

Put the ride out on the forum but use the Riders groups as a starting point.

My first big ride was to a North meets South meet. Surely we can do it again even with this weather if we cn get in touch quickly.

Now I will wait for comments. By the way I'm not suggesting that if you register your interest that you have to go on every ride, just that you want to know about them. We all have other lives.

Why not get this one going a National Meet for those who do ride out! - if it looks bad weather wise then we make a judgement at the time.

Exactly. Wheres all that gone? That Rutland Meet looked fantastic. The truth is the more turn up the better the meet - which leads to more meets. Its making the effort. In my view its not good enough to simply meet for a cup of coffee. Theres got to be an interesting destination to make it worth the ride.
I would be interested in the views of Jim B. Sylar and anyone else who has the time to look at such destinations. What about Duxford?

Now that sounds very interesting. If anybody watching this thread wants to put forward a suggestion then please get involved. I was speaking with a Gold Wing owner once and he told me that the Gold Wing Club or whatever its called had regular deals with conference style hotels where they got great deals on weekend rates. Any interest in that? Seems ideal to me.

I'm not too sure about the 'mines a 300 and they are on 500's' comment. The rule of scooter riding in a group is you go as fast as your slowest rider. I go out with a load of Vespas and Lambrettas on my 850 mana and sit at the back quite happy at 45mph sometimes slower.
