Apologies to ridinghigh for a similar post but I'm pondering on the thought of getting a New scooter, I was looking at the new shape xmax 250 but even a 2011 will knock you back 4 grand,... Or there's a 2008 majesty 400 going for 2900 pounds, but then I think of the fact I've had my wheels & swing arm powder coated and new bearings fitted. I've also just had new tyres fitted aswel. I still have eight hundred quid owing on the xmax...just thinking out aloud.

If the Xmax does what you need it to do, you don't need to change.
Best to wait till it's paid up imo.
But if you have spare cash burning a hole in your pocket...

Well, moving up from a 125 is a very sensible idea as a bigger scoot will enable you to go a lot further (and faster) and even use dual carriageways without being a sitting target. A secondhand Maj 400 does sound like better bargain than a new 250 Xmax to me (assuming its in good nick, with service history, etc etc) - its almost always far more financially sensible to buy something nearly new than brand new. However, there is also the question of what you need your scoot for - if you are just doing short journeys round town, then you might as well run your 125 into the ground as you wont get much advantage out of the extra power. However, if you want to do longer trips, then trade up.
Of course, evaluating how much you can sensibly afford is your problem....but you need some fun in life!

Thanks for the replies lads, I know it probably makes sense to stick with xmax, I'm just fed up with it I suppose, it struggled to start this morning.. and with me having the panels off the other day to inspect the overheating problem I could see bits of rust and oxidized aluminium. I suppose it's to be expected riding all year round...

I'm with Grumpy on this one tallpaul. 125's are great, but you can do so much more with a bigger motor. More comfort, stability, acceleration and better cruise performance. Often without being penalised by using much more fuel either. You will have a much bigger grin all the time, unless you are Mr Grumpy of course!!

400's are good for very long trips too, and are good in town, but only you can decide what one to go for. What you need and what you want are often different things...but as long as you are sensible about it then there is no reason why you cannot have a good compromise and may be get a 400. Just check knee room if you go for the Maj as if you are tall...and I errrr....get the impression you might be, then that may be a factor in the decision. Burgman 400's have more knee room in case that helps.

Su got the 2012 xmax and if your only 5ft 6 to about 5ft 11 you may struggle to put your feet down, the seat is very wide,Im 6ft 1 and cant get my feet flat. I think Su paid about £4100 for her xmax
For less money £3999 the Sym GTS 300 is 0% finance and more power

and its got better spec,Sym 400 GTS £4999 same 0% finance. (same power as Burgman 400 but a lot less in price.)

So are the syms and kymcos catching up with Honda and yamaha etc in the build and reliability stakes? Because they don't seem to be too much cheaper. I do like the look of the kymco downtown and sym gts evo!
