I went in the dealers today to get some work done on the GTS. Whilst there I spotted a
very sorry looking SYM DD50. As my very first scooter when I was 16 back in 2004 was A DD50
I thought i'd have a glance at the Reg and to my shock, yes it was my actual one!
Now it was covered in green moss, it's plastics faded, dirty, chipped, crack here and there...
Exhaust was corroded to hell, rusty kickstarter, rusty stands, both wheels could hardly turn, both
brakes stuck, brake fluid was a murky brown, mirrors also covered in green moss, engine not working,
electrics broke, seat lock broke, battery dead, indicators held on by tape...
It had been bought by a lady and the mileage has doubled but then it was left to rot by the state it was
in i'd presume four years out exposed to the elements. Her husband bought it in (on a pickup) and asked
for it to be made working again. The dealer himself said to me that it was a bit odd. It needed quite a lot of
work which whill cost more than the scoots worth, similiar models (2004) typically fetch £150-350. I personally
would of had it scrapped or done A DIY restoration, accepting it would not make any profit, but would be rewarding
to fixup and ride oneself.
It made me sad, how can someone neglect a scooter a so bad? If your not using it don't let it reach such a disgusting
state, sale it or at least fire it up and ride it around the garden once a week. As it was my very first scooter, well
motorised vehicle for that matter it was quite depressing to see it in such a terrible state. Its put me off ever selling my
GTS, if I sell it will the same thing happen to it? I have no plans to sale my GTS yet and don't think I ever will (may scrap
it/break for parts/store when the time comes).
I'm thinking though, should I see if the owners of my tatty old DD50 will sale it? I'd be willing to pay a small amount for it
then fix it myself. I'd like to get some hands on mechanical experience on a scooter and could this be the answer...
