Northern Riders Oops!

Post by Gerard C »

Yesterday I took the Bike in for a service. Got there in pouring rain no probs. Rode home on hire bike. Got absolutely soaked and wind blasted. So what? The pocket with my phone in leaked and the phone is now living in a bowl of rice, (dry rice not ambrosia), hopefully drying out. I will get the contact numbers off the sim card as soon as possible if this doesn't work. In the meantime no texts.

Never heard of that before.
I took mine apart and dried it on a warm-not-hot radiator once and that worked OK.

Is it only i-phones that have sensors in them that change colour if you get them wet?

This is a very commonly used technique, and is usually successful.

Many moons ago, when tv remotes were very expensive to purchase, we used to adopt this technique regularly for spillage problems. However, being that most spillages were caused by hot and cold beverages, which, more often that not, contain sugar, we still had to carefully open up the remotes to clear out all the sticky sugar residue.

Didn't know that, I didn't expect rice to be absorbent enough - sorry about the brief hijack GC

With my mates son (washing machine - 40deg cycle) and mine (unscheduled river swim and complete failure to be discreet about deploying surveilence gear) - neither of them came up properly until they had really thoroughly dried out - I think the circuits were leaking all over the place until it was absolutely bone dry.

The main point is to never try to turn them on until they are dry.
Salt works better than rice but can cause scratches if you are not careful.

Or, even better, but quite expensive, is silica gel pellets.

Midshipman Hornblower discovered to his cost just how absorbent rice is. :D
