Just a quick question, im doing a service on my K2 400 bergy, would you use a semi or full sythentic and how much will i need with replacing the oil filter, is it 2.1 litres ?

Id buy a 5 litre of semi synth enough for 2 oil changes then fully is overkill IMO

Many have said to me use fully synth but I agree it's an overkill. I use the semi synth as recommended and I'm doing mine soon so bought 4 litres of Motul 5000 10w\40 MA classification for £18.95 and hiflo type filter at £4.95.

I'm using fully synth
I intend to keep the bike for a long time so I'm going with the better shear strength and cold start and because it is a roller bearing engine.

If it makes you feel better then do it your money

I couldn't tell if you've done done a change on your 400 before.

If not, and if it is a long way to your Suzuki dealer it might be worth having the 2 filter "o" rings on hand.
You might get away without replacing them (take 'em back unopened/save for next time). Going by the book it should be done every time.
I think the smaller inner one tends to go first but can't remember why I have that impression.

If it was a "new to me" bike and I didn't know if the previous owner was prone to cutting corners I'd definately replace them this time.

Hi LBL,

The information you require is: OIL CAPACITY if changing with filter is 2ltrs, or 1.9ltrs withoug filter change. Torque the engine oil drain plug carefully to 23nm with as dry as possible threads. INFORMATION is for the 2003 model. Do check the owners manual to be sure if yours is the 2002 version, but I think it's the same.

I'm with Bluebottle on the oil. You can use either fully or semi, but there is a significant advantage in using the fully synthetic, especially if you really like to ride hard and you maybe want to keep the bike a long time. The oil film strength of fully synthetic is between 60-90% stronger than semi when running at full power and maximum temps, and the better shear resistance and flow rate when cold reduces engine wear to as close to zero as is possible. It also reduces engine friction significantly over dino and semi syn. It's also the best thing to use in engines with roller and ball bearing cranks IMHO. I agree with Bluebottle on that. Fully syn oil can be bought for the same or cheaper price than semi if you shop around. I paid just £25.95 for 4Litres of Shell Ultra Advance Fully Synethic last time I ordered. This price does go up and down of course from month to month. I use Smith and Allan, the biggest oil supplier in the UK on Ebay. Delivery is free unless it's just a 1 Litre bottle. Don't forget the oil filter rings as per Bluebottles advice. It's particularly important to change the inner seal o ring. If that ring breaks in service you will lose some oil pressure. The outside case one is a little more robust and you can often get away without replacing. But if you don't know how old it is just replace it anyway to avoid leaks.
