I just replaced the battery in my Nexus with one of these... fantastic turnover.

Doesnt really matter, which you take off first, but try not to touch a screw driver or spanner against anything else metal whilst your undoing the RED one

Which is why you disconnect the negative first, then it doesn't matter if you do touch the screwdriver you're using to undo the positive terminal against the bodywork....

Especially on an X9 as they really do not like short circuits. Odd things can happen to digidashes for example.

On almost all bikes I would take the negative side off first for the same reason DougL gave.
Make sure it doesn't flop back into place and remake the circuit too.
Taking off the pos. side first isn't going to hurt anything in itself but is a worthwhile precaution to always do it neg. first, it isolates the battery.
12v/6v is unlikely to kill you but it might make you jump and do yourself a mischief, the surge can harm components and any size of battery is a fire risk.
It is the other way round for positively earthed vehicles but they are very rare these days
