I have been told today that in 2013 if you pass your cbt you can ride upto 33bhp bikes. Is this true?

Does the 33bhp limit still figure somewhere? or is the 48bhp limit as well as, or instead of it?

I think you have got the wrong end of the stick there StevenM. Allowing CBT holders to ride 33bhp bikes would in effect reverse the 125 learner law. Some previously learner-legal 250s (Suzuki X7, Yamaha RD250LC) put out that sort of power, which is precisely what led to the 125 law.

Forgot to mention. as far as I can recall (as I passed my test long before current licensing laws came in) is newly qualified riders are restricted to 33 bhp for two years (could be three.) As for 48 bhp, I think this is something to do with Direct Access. Maybe someone who went through it could correct me.

Thats as things stand now, its all gonna change in January 2013, which is why its so hard to get a test date now, everyones rushing to get them in before the changes.
Current rules:
* At 17: Take your test on a "125"
- Ride any bike you like but restricted to 33 bhp (100mph) for 2 years then ride any bike you like.
* At 21: Do Direct Access & take your test on a "500"
- Ride any bike you like.
New rules from Jan 2013
* At 17: Take your test on a "125"
- Ride a "125" - yes that's all - for 2 years to qualify for the next test and/or:-
* At 19: Take your test on a "400"
- Ride a bike up to 46 bhp (at least that's an improvement) but only if the original (unrestricted) bike was less than twice that - 92 bhp ??? so no R6 or CBF or.... Yes - that's all - for another 2 years to qualify for the next test - or wait until:-
* At 24: Take your test on a "600"
- Ride any bike you like.

Its all bullshit if you ask me, they make the bike test harder and restrict what you can ride, but any 17 year old can pass a car test and then drive anything they want, finances permitting. Its also going to stop people doing what I and many others have done, and buying a 125 and putting yourself through the test without going through a school, as if you pass on a 125, thats all youll be able to ride, whereas the current laws allow a bigger bike after passing on a 125.

funny isn't it, 35 years ago when I took my test it was quite simple compared to todays standards, which really isn't a good thing as new riders defo have better training today which they definatly need on todays roads, but its too complicated now.
