Looking for a 400 cc scooter after having a 250 cc Piaggio X8.
I have narrowed the choice to Burgman 400 and Silverwing 400.
The SW has two cylinders while the Burger only one and thus the SW is quite a bit heavier. Other than that they seem pretty similar.
Now I would like to hear comments on the ride comfort the these bikes, especially how the do on motorways and in heavier winds. The X8 was said to be stable, but I found it terrible to handle in side or cross winds when the speed was above 80 km/h.
Mainly I will use the scooter for daily commuting, 50 km per day mainly on motorway and also intend to do some touring on it.
Thanks
Pete

Re: SW 400 or Burgman 400?
Are you in the UK as if you are the SW 400 isn't sold here (I have seen an imported one on Ebay though, looks very nice).
Slightly off topic but have you thought of a Xevo 400? Cheaper to buy and service (6000 mile intervals) and very stable on the motorway (it's my only transport and copes well with 100+ mile motorway runs with me and the missus on board). It's slightly slower off the line than the Burgman but a bit more mid and top end grunt.
I think all scoots are less stable than motorbikes in crosswinds but I've never had a big problem, I just go with the flow and don't fight the wind.

Re: SW 400 or Burgman 400?
I am in Finland and still hybernating and only dreaming of the spring and scooter rides. SW 400 is availabe here.
Xevo 400 was on my initial list, but maybe because of the experience with the X8 250 I dropped it and turned to these Japanese bikes. I believe I will have to check the Xevo as well.

Re: SW 400 or Burgman 400?
I'm happy with my Burgman but I have not ridden anything else in it's range. I am a convert from Harley Davidsons. Only thing I can say is the Burgman seems to offer excellent weather protection. I am a big bloke (54 inch chest) and I was out yesterday. No heated grips, just winter gloves, fleece, bike jacket and jeans and the only part of me that catches the cold is the top half of my legs.
As regards cross winds and stability any 2 wheeler is at the mercy. My unfaired bikes used to catch the wind just as bad.

Any chance that you might be able to get a test ride of each one once it thaws out a bit

Re: SW 400 or Burgman 400?
Pekkaha, I have a Burgman 400z abs and find it darn good at just about everthing. Is it the best, probably not but it's right at the top of it's game still along with one or two other good scoots. We have great choice now. Firstly, motorway performance is very good either one or two up. I have ridden two up over distances of 300 miles or more on mostly motorways without ever feeling it needed more power when two up even when blasting straight into a strong headwind. You just don't notice it. I normally cruise at 70mph and it does that effortlessly up hill or down. It's quick away from the lights and junctions. It's comfortable, and it handles crosswinds better than my Vstrom 1000 GT ever did (that had panniers on which didn't help). You can chuck it about through country road bends with aplomb without fear of loosing it. It's very safe. Best of all, it's about the simplist bike to service you can think of with nothing you cannot reasonably do your self if you can hold a spanner! I can't say much more about the other scooter you are asking about as I've only ever owned a Burgman. I've ridden many others but not owned them. The other guys and girls on here will know more than me. Good luck and let us know what you end up buying.

Try a piaggio x10 much less of a wallowing ride than burgman, I've had both, miles better fuel economy and fantastic acceleration.

Re: SW 400 or Burgman 400?
Thanks everybody for your advice. I have to say that at the moment I am leaning towards 400 cc Burgman. Piaggio X10 I fully forgot. Maybe because I am looking at used bikes and you can't find a used X10 yet. Here the taxman has taken care of it that the new scooters are very expensive. I have still a month or so to look around before the riding season starts. I will let you know what happens.
