Bloody Burgman road tax has gone up from £76 to £78 for a year. That's an increase of nearly 4p a week. Time to get rid then.

Hey, look on the bright side. With the extra year that now qualifies for free-VED I can try and get hold of that Allegro I've always promised myself. Cos now it won't be worth less than it costs to tax it....

Nuffink wrong with Allegros. I had three of them and they taught me all I know about vehicle repair and maintenance.
I even had the 1750 Supersport with the black vinyl roof! 0-60 in... well I can't remember, but it was fast!

Allegro? All-Agro more like...

I'm old enough to remember that Ford used the 'the car you always promised yourself' line to advertise the first Capri. Or certainly the Capri that came out in the early 70s in case they used the name for something earlier.

Confession time.

I too had an Allegro, as my very own first car. It was a 1750Sport, a '75 on N plate. And yes, it did feel fast for the time, what with a 1748cc twin-carb putting out 90hp. Mine was dark green, and I "improved" it by painting the dash a similar colour after the fierce London sunshine had faded the existing brown. I did manage an indicated Ton in it. I remember two particular points about it: 1. getting into 1st gear was all but impossible. 2. my dad telling me off as a passenger, saying that the speed didn't feel like 30 (he was looking at the tacho, which had the rpm marked in 100's (so 30 = 3000rpm)

I did not keep it long though, as my head was turned by a '77 Magnum 1800 in glorious Coppertone Starfire ( = metallic brown).

EDIT: just remembered. I once came across a well-driven Equipe when out in the Magnum. My god, that thing was quick and handled well. I found out later that it was well modified.
Ah, those were the days. When being a boy-racer meant pitting your RWD Vaux up against Avenger Tigers, RS Fords and Marina TCs. And no speed cameras.
