Burgman First Impressions

Post by Raven »

Well we've been out on the new Burgman most of the weekend and done 180 miles, it’s settling in very nice and with each ride you can fell her freeing up.

It seems easier to ride than my last Burgman a lot better in the corners and to manoeuver. I have the suspension set at 4 and this is giving Sandy and I a comfy ride, and was contemplating whether to set in a bit softer, it will be one of those trial and error things.

Power wise and can't really comment yet, I have to keep below 4000 RPM for the first 500 miles to run the engine in, but even so we can go along at between 60 - 70 without any problem.

I'm not sure but I don’t think the screen comes up as far as my last Burgman. I am not the tallest and with the screen set in the highest position I can still see over the top quite easily this is not a problem for me as I don't like to look through the screen but would rather look over it, but can report there is very little wind buffeting.

Brakes and other controls are just the same as before easily got at and plain to see, though the heated grips switch still looks as if it as been added at the last moment.

The new dash layout is great and I much prefer this to the older style. It is very pleasing and laid out well. The rev counter and speedo are easy to read as are the fuel and temp gauges with their segmented style. You can select between having the temp display or mpg displayed, I had the mpg displayed most of the time and can say that we were getting 57 mpg most of the time.

There is a noticeable reduction with the storage under the seat you can still get two full face helmets in and a few other bits, but the front helmet has to be positioned in a way so when closing the seat down it doesn't press on the top of the helmet, but saying that once you know this we didn't have any difficulties with it.

Apparently the bike is narrower than the previous model. I had no difficulties placing my feet on the ground when stopped and as I said I’m not the tallest.

So all in all we are very pleased with the new Burgman we had a couple of good trips out and the bike preformed extremely well. I do miss the intercom and radio so this will be one of my first accessories to get.

As your still running it in ,is it wise to have two up? even keeping the revs down the engine is under a lot of strain. :) What was your last Burgman?

I'll keep to the main roads at the moment so the engine is running quite easy and so far it's not been what I would call labouring just needs a bit of route planning and thought.

My last Burgman was a 2009 650 executive we bought new. I dealt it in against a Honda ST1300 pan European. On which we did a tour from Cornwall down through France to Monaco, Cannes through the Pyrenees mountains to Bayonne, Bordeaux, La Rochelle on up the coast to Roscoff and back to Cornwall. We had a fantastic time, but unfortunately in 2011 I had a stroke that for some months left me unable to speak and without coordination. It's thanks to my wife Sandy and friends that I am now 95% over this and back to work and living a normal life.

Anyway enough of my life history, to cut a long story short this year we both missed the two wheel scene, so decided to get another bike. We enjoyed our Burgman so much when we had it. The simplicity of just being able to come home from work on a nice sunny day, jump on and go for a spin down to Lands End or along the coast, anywhere in Cornwall is lovely in the summer. I liked the idea of no gears or clutch to worry about and the 650 Burgmans twin cylinder engine is lovely and smooth so started to look for another one. We looked into getting a used one, but used Burgmans in Cornwall are very hard to find. So decided to go for new. We had some good offers on 2012 models, but I know I would always be wishing I bought the latest 2013 model. There are once again not that many Suzuki dealers in Cornwall so I tried further afield thinking the bigger dealers would give me a better deal. This turned out to not be so. One at Plymouth & another at Exeter quoted me £8970 on the road. So thought if they cant give me a better deal I just as well try my local local dealer in Tucking Mill near Camborne and to my surprise he gave me a price of £8300 on the road for a 2013 model Burgman in Fibroin Grey, a lesson learnt here - try your local small man first... So here we are back on two wheels again and ejoying every minute of it. :D

Cheers

Very pleased to hear you are well and able to enjoy riding again, two years ago i was told if my op went wrong i would be in a wheelchair. After that scare i got my Silverwing and, although not as well travelled as you are i ride most days, all year round. My son in law has a Burgman 650 and we have many happy hours riding together. Make every day count and enjoy your new bike :D
