Hi, I have liberated a low mileage (13k) 250cc burgman 1999 model, the engine is basically in very good condition but requires a camshaft bridge due to the previous owner tampered while trying to adjust the tappets, does anyone now if the earlier 400cc SOHC camshaft bridge is the same as the 250cc bridge as the 250 was not a common model and parts are near impossible to find, could a 400cc SOHC burgman engine be transplanted into the 250 frame or are the earlier engines different mountings? Mr zoomer, hi and welcome to the site. Although I don't have the definitive answer for you, I'm pretty sure the 250 & 400 engines are interchangeable re mounting points. I've not done it, but heard it's just a straight swap. You could almost certainly get the answer by speaking to a Suzuki dealer and I would advise that before parting with hard earned. With reference to the camshaft journal bridge, I've not stripped the 250 engine to make any sort of comparison but again you could look on one of the online parts fiche sites and do a comparison of the part numbers. Don't have a link but there are many sites out there, just google. Of course, there are many folk on here better informed than me and someone may yet come along with a proper answer. My post is really of no help whatsoever!! But good luck...

Thanks for reply, the damaged part is easy to fit (only 4 bolts), the previous owner loosened the 4 fixing bolts when he thought they were the tappets causing the bridge to break after a bit of use, this part is very expensive as Suzuki will not sell it unless I buy the complete cylinder head @500-600 pounds which is not viable on a bike of this age, the bike itself is in very good condition but very hard to get the 250cc parts from breakers, just too good to scrap.

Can't you get some body to TIG it back together and re-machine it?

The 250 engine parts are smaller than the 400. Only the starter motor is inter changeable. I have put a 400 engine in a 250 frame, the top mountings are different.
The 250 has two separate mountings on each side whilst the 400 has a long bolt that that goes through the casings. I measured the length and diameter required for the bolt and found one, not off a Burgman on E-Bay for £10.00.

It is not worth spending any money on the 250 engine if you can get a 400. It is a very simple job to fit. The rear wheel and suspension do not have to be changed and they fit the same as the 250.

Re my last post: Warehouse Motorcycles in Godstone Surrey have my old 250 motor, in bits. The heads are no good but bridge and valves were all in a biscuit box and I suspect he still has them as it was only a month ago I disposed of them.

Thanks for the replies, welding and machining were not an option due to the tiny part that had broken off which also contained an oil gallery, thanks for the info on the 400cc engine as they can be found in the breakers.

Well send it to me and don't junk the motor, i will fix it.
