Hi Chaps and Chapettes,

Newbie here-

Wanted to introduce myself, i've just picked up a new (to me) X-max 400 in white, i have owned a few different bikes over the years but the more recent years the maxi scooters have been a lot cheaper and easier to commute on so in order of old to new i've had a Peugeot Speedfight 100, Gilera Runner VXR, which i changed for a carb's X-max 250 (after 2 years of use, finally started to break) so replaced that with a newer X-max 250i (which again after 18 months started to play games with a misfire) so 2 weeks ago finally became the owner of the new x-max 400.

Sad to say I'm still not 100% convinced over the 250i but i do like the extra oomph seeing as it's normally 2-up with a full top box.

I wanted to give it a review and see if you guys that have them agree:
  • 400cc, ooh yes yes yes initially a lot more torque and bit more oomph off the line but also a hell of a lot more vibrations to go with it. (hopefully this might settle down after a few miles!?)
The screen squeaks and rattles like a good one on the power / pull off
The brakes are good especially the front with the 2 disc set up but also the levers are really high, almost parralel with the ground
The seat is really hard and really wide, I'm 6'2" with an inside of 32-33" but the seat seems higher than any proper bike ive ever owned (even my GSXR 600 K3 and 929 Blade)
That exhaust is really long, and makes the rear end very bulky, i have to think about this when filtering and squeezing between cars and traffic islands
Fuel consumption is about 120-130miles to a full (to the brim) tank (X-max 250 was about 185-190)
I've also made a couple of additions of a set of heated grips and the rear top box rack.

As i said i'm not 100% just yet but it's still early days...

Stalker!
Peugeot Speedfight 2 100 in Acid Green, Gilera Runner VXR200 Matt Black/Carbon, Yamaha X-Max250 '09 Black Max, now Yamaha XMax400 - in Grey...
My take on ownership since June and after 3500 miles...
Yep the Oomph and Torque of the 400 is nice over the 250 - sits around 5k rev and does it all!
Screen Squeak - not heard anything - but I wear ear plugs...
Good Brakes - yep - I usually find scoots under braked - used to dinner plate / 4 potter and a radial master cylinder and riding supermoto! - yep the leavers area a little high - meaning I tend to ride with 2 fingers resting on the leavers... as its harder to get ya fingers up/down - the plastics covering the bars / around the master cylinder are quite close - so no real room to rotate the master cylinder/ lever assembly round - might have a look if I need to take the bar cover off and slice/file a bit of plastic off...
Seat has softened up a tad over the 3500 miles since new... 34" leg so feet flat no probs if ya move to the front of the seat - arse stop is a tad hard and could do with being an inch or so further back...
Riding is sit up n beg - not really enough room for feet forward - and don't really like that as ya can't carry any weight thru ya legs and get a bad back...
Yep zorst is long - had a KTM125 hit me up the arse today - and only hit the zorst end cap! - and with the twin filter housing has a bit of a fat arse for filtering - may of mentioned it before - search 'fat arse'...
As for its thirst... the 250 I was getting 80 mpg on my London commute - with the 400 its more 60 - 65... bout 115 from fuel light to pump click - 9lts-ish so a bit more to go if need be...
I'm on Tucano muffs rather than heated grips, no top box as solo commuter...
Head would of said 'stay with the 250' - Heart says '400 and give it some mittens'...
Some service type info I've posted - Majesty Service kit HiFlo 3x Air filters plus oil filter for about £20 - big saving on OE... - got some EBC pads ready to go think they are the right ones for the front, drawing a blank for the rear... hopefully be able to just lift the caliper off at the rear like on the 250 rather than removing the whole caliper bracket as described in the manuals...

Any good info please post up - I got the Maj Service Manual - so most of the engine bit is taken care of...
Since its dealer first service I've done engine and transmission oil change...
Mine was from A2 Yamaha in Gravesend - and I'm in Orpington/Bromley.

The Grey... - nope not Canary Wharf... Orpington to Central London
Often do a loop - Keston - Biggin Hill - Westerham - towards Edenbridge - back towards Ide Hill, (or off to Heaver) past the Woodman, Halstead, Cudham, and home ...

Twas on a bike safe course on the XMax last sunday from the Warren to Ide Hill, Tonbridge, 227 to Speldhurst n back via Otford... - copper was quite impressed with the scoot...
Saw a 400 in the BP @ Westerham some months ago - he had just changed from a 650 Burger...

Might have to sort out Breakfast @ the Spitfire café and ride down the lanes?
