Apparently Hein Gericke has gone into administration again, with all stores closed and staff given the boot. Apparently the whole HG group in Europe has gone bust. If you've got HG vouchers, seems like your chances of getting anything for them are slim.

Well, I certainly wouldn't have bought gift vouchers from them.

Anyone have an idea why these bike shops are going bust all the time? It's not like they have many great competition, unlike some other more mainstream companies, such as dixons (rivalled by amazon and the like)

I usually prefer internet shopping myself but on bike matters i almost always try to go to a shop and try the equipment out before buying. I believe many bikers are similar to me so i can't understand why these companies are going down all the time. (i think george white went bust too recently?)

The problem Hein Gerice suffers from is the same one that doomed Jessops, its known as "showrooming".

I am afraid I never got into them, found lots of their stuff to be overpriced and their customer service poor. Never the less terrible news for the staff.

I have to say I'm not surprised. I went into my local shop (about 5 mins away from me) last Sunday and it had no customers and very little stock. I feel sorry for the staff. I wonder if Infinity might buy more of their stores like they did last time around?

That's got to have been a factor in their demise, but as you say, still sad for the staff.

Same here. I was looking for boots last weekend and went into Gants Hill branch. The prices were very high, such that when I went to Metropolis (near work) the same day, I bought a pair there instead. It comes to something when Metropolis are cheaper than someone else....

It was sad when Rivetts of Leytonstone went. Now HG. Bugger.

Our local HG shop (Mannheim-Germany) is still open. (As was Polo all the time under administration.)
I snatched the black-yellow HG Essex Jacket for 44.79€ (reduced to 55.99€ before and now another 20% christmas discount). Quite simple jacket, without Goretex or many waterproof pockets. But with detachable lining and solid back protector.
Salut/Cheers
