Wonder if you could help me with a query?

I have the opportunity to buy a Honda FES 250 from a family member. I only have a provisional entitlement but will doing my CBT soon.

As I'm well over 24 I was looking to do a course for Cat A2 or Cat A for a licence covering automatics only, but must be over 395cc (A2) and 595cc (A).

The problem is and with the new rules, no training schools around here have automatics over 125cc. So how do I go about obtaining one of the licences if the schools don't offer the equipment?

Is my only option to go down the geared route? Even if I do the 125cc automatic course how could I progress to higher licence if not allowed to ride anything above 125cc to the training and test centre?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

You will have to take big bike geared test .To be honest most modern 125's will keep up with traffic nowadays and you can ride straight after cbt .You have to weigh up price training using trainers bike against what you save by buying the 250

Ok thanks for the reply. Looks like I'll have to take the full geared motorcycle route then. Seems a long way round just to ride a scooter over 125cc. Maybe with the new rules and if demand picks up, training schools will start adding higher powered scooters to their fleet?

The other possibility is to have the instructor come to my house and do hourly lessons, but not sure yet if I can even insure a big bike/scooter under provisional licence with CBT.

I've been looking at some other scooters and would like to progress to a maxi-scooter in time so will defiantly find a way.

I very much doubt they will add maxi scoots to their fleets not enough demand plastics break if you fall over with it thats why trainer bikes have crash bars on .

take the Das direct access course, if you can afford it ,as they are about to change all the rules of learning to ride motorbikes.

Yes direst access seems the only way to go. Will have to spread the lessons though and probably now have to get a 125 geared for practice. Not too sure about these intensive courses, plus if
you fail Mod 1 you lose your Mod 2 fee if I understand correctly.

Not at all what I expected since researching this. The new rules don't seem to take new scooter riders into account if they want to own anything above a 125cc, forcing you
down the geared route. Not that I object to learning to ride on a geared bike, just be nice to have more than one option.
