I had an 08 Xmax 250 for 5 years and about 22K miles.

I loved it.

I got a Xmax 400 last year, done about 2000 miles now.

PROS: It is fast

CONS: Mirrors need to be further forward on fairing like a TMAX. When you are crouching forward at 70 mph plus to avoid the shocking wind noise (I''m 5'11'') your head is in front of the mirrors. Useless.

Getting about 60 mpg as opposed to 80 mpg on X MAX 250.

The apron acts like a sail in crosswinds. Dangerous as hell at speed.

My biggest gripe is the fuel tank capacity. Advertised as 14 litres, I struggle to get just over 11 litres in mine. Joke, it means I have to fill up pretty much every day during the working week, was hoping it would only be 2 or 3 times a week.

Had my 400 since June '13, on 5k5 miles at the mo, and got my 6k service booked in 3 weeks.

250 was giving 80mpg on a stop/start commute - now getting late 50's to 60 on the 400...
Got The Yam apron - pain in the arse to fill up - and took it off again...
Tank capacity - pump clips off at about the 11 lt mark from a flashing segment/fuel odo...

Is it me or has the 400 got a fat arse?

3 Air filters and an oil filter... £22, plus £3 P&P - Thats £25! - OE is getting on for £70!
At those prices I plan to do a Change @ 6k miles, rather than a clean

And download a copy of the 400 Maj Service book from 'ScooterTime.net' for engine info and a good estimation for most chassis torque settings etc

Hopefully (for me and others!) your coolant issue was just a one off if that clip was loose.

I had a thermostat issue on the XMAX 250 which I think affected a lot of owners. That came just out of warranty. Typical. Yamaha were good enough to pay for parts, I got lumbered with service though. Early days for 400's, let's keep our fingers crossed.

The fact that fuel capacity is poor against advertised level is a major bind. The number one factor behind my decision to move up from the 250 was my commute distance trebling (plus faster roads). I was hoping the 14 litres would do for just over two days. Fill up every day with that apron in winter is tedious.

I've also noticed the fat arse; I got a a minor graze from a traffic island on that plastic looking heat shield after about a fortnight.
In the long term a fat rear end can't be a bad thing if it makes you think twice about REALLY narrow gaps when filtering.

Thanks for the diagram links, I'll be passing them to my brother when the need arises. He is a bike mechanic. I am clueless...
