i emailed kawasaki technical guys a couple of days ago regarding the j300 disk rotors, in all the blurb and press release footage the scoot is shown in all three colour variants as having petal disk rotors to front and rear of the scoot, yet the j300se i rode and a silver and black ones i have seen dont have petal rear disks, they have standard rear disks, it seems that ONLY the j300 SE ABS model comes with rear petal disks, just thought i would state for the muppets, reply below

I can understand why there is some confusion regarding your question based on the information provided on our website and in the motorcycle press. To clarify the situation, the non-ABS J300 model is fitted as standard with a petal front brake disc and a conventional round rear brake disc. The ABS J300 model is fitted as standard with a petal front brake disc and a petal rear brake disc.

So in answer to your question, your J300 Special Edition ABS model will be fitted with a front petal brake disc and a rear petal brake disc.

I hope this has answered the valid point that you have raised.

Mind you, you'd have to be a bit odd to be swayed only by the presence or absence of a funny shaped disc!

true it just bugged me why they showed all scoots with... and they did not, marketing and their website needs changing

also Stephenc make sure you get the free datatag as kawasaki offer it free to all new motorcycles/scooters, the dealer fits it.

Kawasaki dealers will also be fitting a Master Security marking system along with each new machine.

same here im not really fussed just needed clarity, although petal disks may look less, they are usually heavier as they are thicker than standard disks. so they work with Reduced moment (different than reduced weight, has a more direct effect on how much force is required to accelerate or decelerate the wheel)
Better heat dissipation (allows more braking without transferring too much heat to pads, brake fluid, hubs and bearings)
Increased "swept area" (allows pads a better and more consistent "bite" across their area and keeps pad wear and heat buildup even)

Sort of.

The petal shape allows for a greater air gap, close to the friction moment arm (the point of contact between pad and disk). But air is poor conductor of heat. Petal disks have less metal typically, so will transfer more heat through greater surface area (same reason as Norway has a much longer coastline than the UK, coz of all the wiggly bits) while the lower weight reduces unsprung weight.

Of course if that were the answer the Manufacturers should then answer the bloody obvious question as to why they don't load their bikes with a single, large-diameter disk - a la Buell.

I'm still waiting for them to get back to me on that one (since 1995).
