I have a long gravel drive and despite my best efforts all sorts of crud finds its way onto it. Last year I got a screw in my rear tyre and yesterday when sorting out the tyres on the new bike I knelt on a large brass screw laying in the gravel, goodness knows where it had come from. I am starting to get a bit paranoid about this, I ride down the drive to put the bike in the garage and also my car is on the drive. To make things worse I am having my entire roof replaced this year so I hate to think what will end up on the drive then. I am thinking about looking on Ebay for a cheap metal detector and doing a regular sweep of the drive, what do you think? When I bought the house it had a well worn tarmac drive which I renewed but it only lasted 4 years before it starting cracking and had bits lifting off. The drive people suggested I go for gravel but I am not so sure it was a good idea I do wonder about biting the bullet and having it all taken up and replaced with tiles or slabs but its a big drive so I hate to think what that would cost. Ant suggestions or ideas, thanks guys.

to be cost conscious, i would just pave slab either a path for the scoot or a double slab laid as a track for the car and the scoot can be driven up one path, if its that long... you could then do it yourself, get the slabs and sand delivered

Sounds a damn fine idea to me, certainly worth trying first before anything more costly.

Find a decent firm and get block paving installed, you really can't beat it for grip, ease of repair and durability.
