I have joined the Burgmanusa forum, some one who shall remain nameless said I would sooner rather than later. I am amazed at how many members use car tyres on the rear of their scoots. Do they not have many corners in the USA or Canada? I would have thought you would have less grip with a car tyre on cornering or am I wrong!

Their roads tend to be straighter/longer and there laws are different.

If I wanted to use a car tyre I'd get in a car.

It isn't just grip, car and bike tyres have different geometry and handle forces differently (physics and structure are different)

Frank you should learn to accept the Wisdom of others. Whoever this mysterious person was, you will thank him for broadening your horizons and putting you on the path of righteousness.

This subject (like a few others) raises two opposing views, all I'll say is everyone can make their own choice on the stupidity or validity of "darksiding" once they've read and seen the statements from those that choose that route.

There are many many YouTube videos from darksiders showing what happens to the rear tyre (tire!) and plenty of long-standing members on BUSA who've done significant mileage without issue.

Yeah...I was amazed that people even considered using a car tyre! There again, with the dreadfully short tyre life you get on most maxis, you'd wear a tyre out in done decent trip across the USA! Presumably they are used to Harleys where you can't achieve any worthwhile lean angle anyway, so it won't be much different....

Cant see the insurance people being that impressed when you have lost control and trying to make a claim think you would find yourself with a trashed bike no pay out

Whatever you think of the safety implications, like alp231said, you'd certainly invalidate your insurance.

You'd probably be prosecuted too if the police found out.

Risking your life (and those of the pedestrians/drivers around you) to save a few quid on a bike tire is madness but seeing the general attitude to ppe on bikes and driving standards in the U.S, I'm not surprised.

I would not dream of dark siding but was interested in the opinion of others. I suppose this just confirms my personal opinion of americans
