Hi guys, Geoff from NZ here. Actually in NZ, not visiting UK.
I started my scootering for commuting in 2003(?) on a 1978 Honda NF75. Had to actually paddle with feet to aid starting acceleration! Next a new PGO Trex 150, then a new Runner 180SP which I regretfully traded on a Piagio X9 250. This was actually a very good machine, just not a blast to ride like the Runner. I never had any issues with it and only stopped using it the instant it was written off (rear ended by learner driver) in 2013.
Currently my only scoot is a red 2002 TMax which I've had since 2008 (3rd owner) so this is now doing commute duties as well as 'rides'.
I've had issues with this along the lines of some other posts I've read, so I'll chip in on those threads with my 2 cents worth. On balance though, the bike is worth the occasional grief.
Safe riding and remember: only scratch the stand, not the plastic!

Welcome from Cornwall, where it's warm wet and windy. Summer seems a long way off here!

Hi What part of New Zealand are you from? I have family out there - you might know them Ha Ha.
Seriously what is the Maxi Scooter scene like over there? I have always wanted to visit and hire a decent machine and do a tour. All I can find on line are 50cc run arounds.

I'm in Upper Hutt, Wellington region.
I've seen several Maxis kicking around locally: X9 500 (yellow - the yellow X9s that were issued to owners during a massive recall years ago were rounded up and I think NZ got them all; I've never seen a non yellow 500), Majesty's 250 & 400, some Korean 300s. Ubiquitous Burghmans all capacities. The BMWs are here too. Silverwings haven't been sold here for a few years now - heck, are they even being made?
I would have sworn I had the only TMax locally until a few weeks ago. Via Chinese whispers I was contacted by another member of the Maxi Muppets "Maxiscooter nz" & he heads an informal Wellington group that get out for rides. I was pretty much a lone rider to this point. Several Tmax in this group, of all marques.
When it comes to touring here, you should be able to find a couple of bike rental outfits, tho whether they do Maxis is an unknown. If you were coming for more than just a couple of weeks, it may pay to buy one & sell it on departure. Have a look at Trademe.co.nz, NZs supremo online auction/trading site.

Well co incidence rules! My Sister and family live in Wellington! We visited them and saw a few organised bike tours. I do have a full license for geared bikes but would prefer to do the tour on a Maxi mainly because the Wife would not be happy on anything else.
Your suggestion that I buy and then sell would make a lot of sense so I will checkout the suggested site and take a look.
