Hello from Oxfordshire.

Post by millie-mail »

Hello.
My name is Dave and I am 51. After a recent return to two wheels, I am looking for a maxi scooter as my daily transport. It has to be a do all so decent storage for groceries, helmets, clothing etc. and motorway capable for two up touring and fairly good fuel consumption. I like the look of the Burgman 400 but a bit put off by the oil consumption stories. The Honda silverwing looks good and solid if possibly a little on the large side, also looking at the xmax 400. I would be grateful for any real world advice and/or suggestions.

Thanks

You said you hadn't heard ANY stories so I showed you the stories I had read. The more I read the more I was put off. I like the Burgman 400, I am just unhappy at the moment to spend my cash when there are so many unhappy customers posting their problems on the internet.

XMax400, lots of storage, 60-65 real world mpg, maybe a little more on a run.
Majesty 400 engine, XMax styling and seating possibly more commute that tour / M-way...
Maybe worth looking for a 400 Majesty, more room for 2, feet forward etc...

Edit: My Xmax 400 - oil change every 3000 miles, I have topped up of about 250ml at half time / 1500 the odd time... maybe down to how its used,
Stop Start Commuting... running from cold (not thrashing - but i start-up put my zip my jacket up gloves on and pootle off for half a mile or so before hitting the main 40 mph road rather than sit and idle for 5 mins... filters get dirty quick, mentioned on Majesty UK, down to the positioning, and twin air filters plus variator filter

But Does sound like the 400 burger should also be on your list...

Seriously get a test ride on the Maj 400 and Burger 400 - from there you have a place to start and judge others by...
If going New or Newish Sym and Kymco could be on your list - both have bigger styled 400's again see who will offer a test ride - easier to get a test on a 400 than a 125 / 250...

Hang on, we have 2 x 400 Burgman's they don't use oil at all. I am not aware of any on going problem. The Burgman 400 is one of the most popular Scoots so I wouldn't discount it. We have just come back from a tour of Holland, Germany and not a drop used in either Bike. Ones a 14 plate the others a 09.

Hi Dave,

My 04 Burgman 400 hasn't used any oil, I've had the bike since May and have only done about 1500 miles since but not a drop has been required. The Burg is comfortable, relatively quick away from the lights, good storage and returns about 70mpg. Feels fine when playing with the mway traffic and is great through the jams around Worcester.

I looked at the Xmax prior to buying the Burg and it is a good machine however the Suzuki 'fitted' more with what I wanted it for.

The chaps on here are a mine of information but the best way to find out is to try a few...
