What year is yours? Old ones (1999-2000) habitually do, newer ones probably not.

Probably normal, should settle down now it's run in, but make sure you check it correctly, the sight glass is in an oil gallery, so requires the scoot to be level and vertical and the oil must have enough time to drain back into the crankcase. My 2009 used very little between changes.

Phil, how do you check your oil. You may get anomalous readings if you don't do it the Suzuki way as laid down in the Owners Handbook. As Dave says, the bike must be upright on it's wheels for this check, having been run for 3 mins on the centre stand and then allowed to stand for a further 3 mins on the centre stand with engine off. Next, put it on it's wheels on level ground and check the engine oil sight glass. If you don't do it this way you'll never get an accurate reading and it could end up varying a lot.

The other thing is Burgman 400 engines from 2007 onwards require at least 7500 miles to fully finish conforming (running in). Until then you won't know truly how much oil it uses in-between changes. Make sure also you don't use fully synthetic oil before 7500 miles either as it will stop the engine fully conforming and you may end up using oil. Stick to semi synthetic until then.

My own 2012 model used some small amount of oil up to 3000 miles. Then stopped completely. It uses no oil whatsoever now. If you ran her in slowly, it may take longer to stop using oil.
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

Been riding for 55 years & owned too many bikes to list here...

Cheers Data I did run it in for 800 mile no more than 50 mph then 100 mile to 60mph then another 100 up to 70 mph. I normally just potter along at 55 - 60 any way but will keep an eye on oil and yes I use semi synthetic in it
