drive belt

Hello!
My AN400 K5 is running very nicely, at nearly 25,000 miles. I bought it well second hand, obviously well cared for but I have no idea when last the Drive Belt was changed, will I get any warning symptoms when the belt is nearing it's end?
There are 7 Stamped entries in the service book, but I don't think that will tell me anything.

the belt has a standard width for your ride, so its the casing off then measure the width of belt and look for any cracks inbetween the teeth (if you can bend it in situe on bike to see inbetween the teeth, your ride is 2003 to 2006 K3 to K6 before they changed model year in 2007 but your 2003/6 is harder to find belt. so it could be the 2007/8 year is same size for buying a gates or dayco belt like this for £60 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-AN-400 ... yours if bought by the suzi genuine parts is V BELT DRIVE 27601-15F10-000 which is £108 to £120 ish UK
if you PM Data as it looks like the belt width and length is the same as the 2007 2008 model year 27.7 width and 1011 length if so the above £60 is a bargain??? how long they last should be easy to find yourself in your owners manual... you dont want one to snap on you..... imagine going round a bend , leant over and the belt snaps, its sometimes wraps around the variator or clutch which will or could lock the wheel. have always had a change as first job on car timing belts and bike v belts if not known cheers

Michael, Thanks for the advice, I'll do as you suggest. I guess I asked for advice because I'm uneasy about not knowing how many miles the belt has done.

hi robin thats ok, id just take off the casing and have a ganders, the front casing will prob have a variator filter to wash out. 27.7mm width of belt and try bend the belt to see if cracks in be tween the teeth, the angle of the teeth is standard 30 degree`s so have a good clean out of inner casing (small paint brush for dust) especially the clutch area... i normally have just tapped the clutch bell with rubber mallet to loosen the crud if any there may be a paper gasket between the cover you take off and the crankcase... so slight taps if never been off for a while with rubber mallet or get the other end of the mallet at the rear of casing underneath usually has a hole for dust to get out and prise slowly there

Interesting comments from BUSA The chap's fretting about his revs to mph ratio at 1400 miles. My k5 has been like that for at least a couple of years. Mind you I have got a belt and Dr Pulleys ready, I just haven't got around to doing it yet.....

Hi again,
The K5 (Engine No K429) Belt shows up as shorter than the later models.
I've ordered a Malossi belt from racing-planet.co.uk £80.oo for the belt and a universal clutch/variator locking tool, delivered, hope that sound OK.
I just need to figure out how to remove enough Tupperware to access the Transmission covers

its normally the bolt under the footpeg and work forward under the foot mats, enough to get the front variator part off
just check once on that you do check every 5000 miles to be sure, malossi belts in past have not been the best, but im sure they have got better
