T Max MPG and Range

Post by Scootalli »

Hi

I know MPG isnt the T-Max strong point and I dont really care about it, but range is a bit more important to me.

Today I tested MPG and Range.

LO Fuel showed and then it started flashing and starting counting the miles since the flashing started.

I went 15 miles on the Fuel trip, ie flashing for 15 miles and filled up.

I had done a total of 162 miles since the last fill up and got 12 litres in it, so in theory I had 3 litres left.

So, the 12 litres for 162 miles is approx 61 mpg which is what I am expecting for mixed riding, less for lots of short journeys or going very fast on motorway and maybe a bit more at optimum conditions.

The range to empty at this would be 3 litres at 61mpg would be another 40 miles so max range 200 miles,

Maybe this is achievable on optimum run, but not too bad overall.

How far have people pushed the flashing range, I reckon you have approx 1 uk gallon left when it starts flashing which could be 40 - 60 miles.

Has anyone experience fuel starvation on corners if the fuel has got too low?

Reserve is 3 ltrs so probably around 35 miles on 'empty'. I'm a bit of wimp when it comes to low fuel indications, and I rush to a petrol station when the gauge gets down to a quarter full!!! Normally you can do 140 miles before the empty light goes on, though it can be less in some circumstances. The gauge itself can be slightly erratic, with only the 1st version having a proper gauge, the rest having these electronic indicator with bars vanishing with the petrol.

Be careful about the amount left. Yamaha tend to calculate tank capacity on total tank volume, not what can be put into it. My Yamaha V Star 1300 had a 19 litre tank capacity quoted by Yamaha, but would only hold 17 litres as I found out by running out of fuel within 1 km of a planned refuel stop.

Hmmm...that's NOT a fact you want to find out at the roadside!

My Mk3 Tmax would achieve the mpg in my signature, which is why after 8 years of riding one I switched to an NC750 which averages 80-90, having to fettle a chain was a price I was willing to pay for better mpg.
