Friends of mine were 2 up on their bike through France a few years ago. Travelling at about 60mph through forest roads, very straight with good surface. Deer appeared and took them out. Airlifted to hospital, both nine days in hospital before discharge. Seriously injured. Happily now fully recovered and riding again. We have forest deer in these parts and whenever I ride, if possible I stick to middle of road to give me more time to react and always ride at reduced speed. You’re right though, in this instance deer appeared very quickly and you weren’t riding too fast. Happily you can replace bike parts. Glad you weren’t injured. Out of interest I’d have been back quickly to load all that venison into my car!!

No chance of avoiding that deer, I've had one come out but stopped and run down the road in front of me, until in fell over turning into a clearing. That was on an X9 ride in the Forest of Dean, one of the scoots in front of me had a sports exhaust and the animal must have wanted a better look.
Well done for staying upright, the weight of the Burgman 650 helped.
