My turn for crash bang wallop!

I've no idea what actually happened....I was on the Tmax mk3, just been shopping, behind a van which turned left into a school. I went to the right to go round him, doing all of 15mph, but hidden from my view was another van turning out of the same turning, so I braked, and the rear instantly spun out to the right putting me straight down on the deck. Diesel or some other nasty stuff perhaps?
No injuries, but the Tmax has some panel damage - broken LH mirror and the rear 3 quarter panel smashed, plus a couple of minor scrapes. Remarkably, a new panel from Yamaha is only £150 - I was expecting at least 4 or 5 times that, and I can source an aftermarket mirror from easyparts in the Netherlands for €25.

Talk about hassle I don't need!!!!

Oh, that's bad news Mr G. You'll be kicking yourself I bet, for not holding back behind the van.

Blimey, 15 mph on my ebike is fast enough for a not-insignificant smack - I sometimes scare myself on my bloody ebike.

Not that much damage to involve your insurance company - assuming you have fully comp?

Sorry to hear this Grumpy! Glad you are ok, it could have been worse. At least you can fix the bike easily...or with minimal hassle and it seems without too much cost. Take care mate.

Yes, not going near the insurance company! I'm not sure of my excess - for some reason I think they are different on the two Scoots and higher on this one, so it may not cost more than the excess anyway. And even if it did, I'd only get a liittle money, and forever have this fault claim on the record. So it never happened!
It shouldn't have been a problem, I was going quite slowly! Its ironic that I spent half of last winter creeping around on black ice, and now I drop it on a bit of damp tarmac! It shouldn't have gone that suddenly at that speed...

I wondered whether ABS would save it, but I'm not sure. After all, it wasn't even an emergency stop! It wasn't an 'OMG there's a van dead ahead' moment. It just kicked sideways so suddenly that it put me down. Its possible that the ABS would have kicked in and reduced the braking force if it detected a lack of grip, but the whole event was over in less than a second - I'm not sure whether the ABS would in itself be able to stop that sideways motion. I know some expensive and sophisticated bikes have 'Cornering ABS' now. Don't know too much about it, but I wonder if that might have assisted more than normal ABS.

Now got some minor aches and pains! And a graze on my thigh - slightly surprised at that as I was wearing armoured jeans fully lined with Kevlar.

It probably went sideways because it locked up .I'm pondering selling my mk2 getting something lighter with abs .

You'd have to go to something much smaller engine wise to get a significantly lighter scoot. Even 300-400cc scoots aren' much lighter than the Tmax, which is relatively light for its cc. The 400 Maj/Xmax is the same weight as the Tmax!

ABS has helped me a couple of times when I've been braking in a straight line, I don't think it would do much good if you have the scoot leaning over.
glad you got away with one Grumpy. You probably could not see through the van turning left. Hold back at this time of year, there's a lot of bad panic driving going on, u turns instead joining queues etc.
