wind

Post by knight2 »

I took the Burgman for a spin this afternoon in Derbyshire and it was more than a tad windy. This is the second time I've had it out in heavy wind last time it was worse than today, but it doesn't seem to bother it at all. On most of my motorbikes I would have expected a reaction of some sort. So my question is is it a burgman 650 thing, being so heavy but low down weight or is it a scooter thing in general.

I never thought the big Burger was THAT good in crosswinds - not bad, but not brilliant. Scoots do vary - early Tmaxs were very good in crosswinds, but later ones don't seem so good.
The best was the Aprilia Atlantic 500 - the wind would be almost blowing you off the scoot, but the scoot would not be move at all. The worst was my Aprilia Leonardo 250 - blown around like a paper bag! I'd have to avoid some flyovers on dual carriageways!

I used to find my T max MK 1 seemed quite subject to being hassled by wind but thats the smallest scooter I ever rode except a Joymax 200 for a month of so in summer.

And I wasn`t about to keep riding that for long as it was knocking the hell out of me. Though I sort of liked it as well.

The Silverwing copes much better and feels much more planted in gusts than the Max. Very noticebly firmer grounded.

I sort of wish I had gone to a Burgman 650, though they are quite serious to move about it seems even though not so much heavier.

Are there any new 650`s still about here and there or are they all gone, anyone seen any new ones still sat waiting lately ?

I suppose it's what your used to, I didn't think my nt 700 Deauville was too bad in the wind. Actually thinking about it when I first bought it I didn't like it in the wind. I remember riding northbound up the M1 just past Woodall services and getting blown across the lane I was in. In comparison the Burgman is a lot better, a lower CoG must help and maybe the step through bit gives a bit of release, whatever it is I like it.

The B650 is fine in high winds. I never had an issue with mine. Then again I was always loaded very heavily. Same with the B400 that I had, no wind issues. The best bikes I had for absolute best wind behaviour were my GSX1400's. The weather no matter how bad just moved out of the way! :o
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

Been riding for 55 years & owned too many bikes to list here...

I sold my XJR1300 and bought the Deauville which I think is why I found the deauville a bit of a mare in the wind at first. The XJR was stable in any conditions except one, Snow. I went to work in the morning and the weather was fine, but it started snowing about dinner time and didn't stop. I was driving an artic at the time carrying containers and I was booked in to tip a 40' container near Lancaster at four in the afternoon so there was no chance of leaving work early. Getting back to the yard in Rotherham was a mare, then I had to get the XJR home. by this time it was about eight in the evening and the snow was quite thick and still coming down. All that power going through a rear tyre that really wasn't suited to the conditions meant even a light touch on the throttle meant spinning the rear up. The only reason I only fell off twice is that I didn't get back on it after that and walked along side it with the motor going and just letting the clutch in and out so I didn't have to push the thing. For some strange reason leaving the bike at work and walking home never crossed my mind  . probably because I had always ridden my bikes in all weathers with out much problem, haven't ridden in the snow since.
If there is anybody on here who has driven articulated lorries in the snow will know, they are far more frightening than the XJR was. Happy Days :D they were, mostly.
