For northen riders !

Post by knight2 »

If you want a ride with a bit of a difference I had a brilliant one last Thursday, I visited Yordas Cave. I found the place last year but set off without a torch  to be honest I didn't think it would be that big and I could manage with the light on my phone, I was wrong on both counts. So seeing there was a good weather forecast for last thursday , it was a 215 mile round trip, I decided to go again it's on Thornton lane which is a single track very twisty in places with cattle grids and gates that have to be opened and closed, country code and all that. The lane runs from Thornton in Lonsdale and is sign posted to Dent the cave is about halfway up

this is the view from the road so it is easily missed. It's hidden in the trees.
Entering the cave there are three steps down then a a slope which is slippery but takes you down to the floor of the cave, the main part of the cave is to the right from here on you need, a good torch, good waterproof boots and a waterproof coat, water dripping from the ceiling. As a biker you will probably have two of these. The floor of the cave is mostly a running stream and stoney. As soon as you get in you can hear a waterfall but you can't see it, on my first visit I didn't find it at all. But if you walk, wade to the end of the cave on the left and there is a small recess on your right big enough for two people where there is a opening about 5 ft off the floor where you can look into another cave which is taken up by the waterfall which is quite impressive and noisy, it makes for an unusual day out in an area or outstanding beauty as they say. On this occasion I would agree as you ride over the top into Deepdale the view is stunning. From there I rode under Dent Head viaduct to the main road turned left and rode down through Hawes on down Wensleydale and got on the A1 southbound at Bedae beautiful scenery and roads all the way.
Sorry for such a long post but it was a really good ride out.

Have visited there several times when I used to help with a Scout troop. Definitely wet and dark !! We were once treated to the spectacle of potholders coming down the waterfall ! A glorious part of the country to tour but can get very busy.
