Fork Stanchion Rechroming

Post by Pukmeister »

Gents, does anyone know of a dependable company for rechroming damaged forks in the South?

Everyone I have tried so far is booked out for about six months with work. My Tmax Mk3 left hand fork leg has a chip in the chrome that has caused it to weep fork oil, I stripped and refurbed both forks but its still leaking.

I phoned Firefox Racing in Keighley, Yorkshire and ended up buying a new (aftermarket) fork stanchion tube as its only £50 more than a rechrome and is available now but I'd like to get the old one rechromed in slow time as a spare. £200 for a stanchion tube and seals with vat and delivery isn't that bad so at least I can get it fixed and through the next MOT.

I've also ordered a second hand rear shock unit from a low miler, hopefully I can also get the old rear shock refurbed as a spare in slow time.

The bike is now showing 52k so its time for a bit of TLC before we get into winter, probably a new radiator and a valve check/full service whilst I have it all apart. I don't really want to be riding my GSA worth around £15k through a daily winter commute when the scooter is the better weapon of choice for the job.

I have only ever used one company, but used them many times. If they are busy, I wait. They are that good.

They are a bit old school so don't expect a fancy website, online booking, "follow your order's progress" updates etc.

They are HARD CHROME PLATING AND GRINDING in Mansfield.

Unit 15 Hermitage Way
Mansfield
Nottinghamshire
NG18 5ES

Steve responds to emails on sales@hardchromeplating.co.uk but probably best ringing him directly on Zero Seven 86 Zero 235 Seven Zero 9

The shop itself also has a phone number Zero 1 Six 23 23 Seven 858 but as far as I can make out they don't have admin staff, so you might have to wait until someone stops what they are doing to answer the phone.

Capitano, thanks but I had already tried Steve in Mansfield using his website contact details but his business number said number no longer in service, his mobile went straight to voicemail. He could be on a summer holiday but I did leave him a voicemail and an email, then sent him another to say not to bother with me once I had spoken to Firefox and ordered through them instead.

I might try him again in slow time, it would be handy to have a spare stanchion in case I get another problematic fork seal leak.

Unfortunately I think he pretty much runs the show on his own, now.

Probably just the wrong time of year.

Been using my R1250GSA this week to commute whilst I await a few Tmax spares from Fowlers on back-order.

Bloody wood screw stuck though the rear tyre yesterday, quite possibly a malicious act of jealousy or contempt. My boss warned me he had picked up a handful of such screws from the bike parking area outside our office doorway.

Perks of owning a shiny expensive main bike I guess, nobody bats an eye at my old scooter.

You can't win.

The irony is my scooter parts arrive today.

That is tough luck, though it is hard to imagine a screw finding its way into a tyre that neatly and deep, with no sign of road rub on the head. Your analysis may be right - there are some dangerous b*st**ds about aren't there?

All's well that ends well......

I have plugged the rear tyre puncture on my GSA and then rebuilt the Tmax front and rear suspension including the new left hand front fork leg and new seals.

I've just done my first commute to work on it this morning and its perfect again and all ready for its MOT next week.
