Mersea Island

I invaded Essex yesterday for a ride down through Colchester to the Island. The last time I was there was probably 1980-81 when I was driving an HGV doing deliveries after leaving the army. I forgot just how large it was. My questions to you Essex folks, which part do you recommend, the East or West? Is there a chip shop? I couldn’t find one. If I was to take a camper van down is there a preferred campsite?

You need a special visa for Mersea. East Mersea is very quiet. West is the main town.

If you are invading Essex, you need to take a leaf out of Napoleon's book from when he invaded Russia.....he marched all the way there, found that the place was in ruins, and marched all the way back. Should've stayed at home.....

I had a chicken pie off the specials board at The Coast Inn at West Mersea a few days ago. The plates of fish and chips coming out of the kitchen were huge but unfortunately they don't curry sauce to go with it. At least my pie had a jug of good gravy to dip my fat chips in.
I rode past the Tiptree Jam factory on the way home. I'm mentioning it solely because I get through a jar of their orange and tangerine marmalade every week.

There is a tearoom in the Tiptree Jam Museum, there's also one in Chelmsford I've been in a couple of times.

Hi Steve, yes the tea shop at Tiptree Jam's is brilliant. Wife & me had afternoon tea there just a few weeks ago, & I haven't had better. Good car or bike parking too. It's slightly posh now but I fitted in!!
