for those who use the manual mode ,has anyone used the overdrive when cruising at motorway speed,
i didn't realize there ''was'' another gear after 5th , but reading the other side of the pond that , in manual you can drop the revs to save petrol by moving up from 5th to overdrive, been using it today & doesn't seem to be much difference , strange not mentioned in the manual also ,

Early 650 models did not have the overdrive feature
I think models from K5 upwards had them.
I used to use it on my Burgervan 650, it drops the revs by about 500rpm, every little helps

I have used it but only because it was there, the revs drop a bit but not much.

Saves a lot of fuel if on a French motorway blatin it to get down sarf
Full bore i got as little as 32MPG on the first Burger, same trip on the second
netted 43MPG in overdrive, but you do have to remember you have it.

When I have been driving at a steady speed on the motorway and have flicked between manual OD and auto I didnt notice any real difference in RPM. I guessed that the auto box was using the overdirve feature anyway. The one way it does seem to save fuel is tha it wont shift down at all like it does in auto if you accelerate slightly. However I have been in a situation where I left it in OD and went to overtake forgetting it was in manual and wondered why it was accelerating very well. This could be quite dangerous.

There should be a "kickdown" feature for instances like that.

There is it's called "Auto", if you've selected to ride in manual mode you have control of the selected gears just like in a car.

One thing I believe (not having OD I don't know for sure) is that you have to select it using "UP" once you're in 5th in manual mode. So as Smurph commented you have to remember to use it, not sure why it doesn't get selected when in Auto, no doubt the way they added it on afterwards and how they've managed to do that.

I do think it gets selected when it's in auto. When I have switched between OD and auto I haven't noticed any drop in RPM.

I was told that but I could'nt get the Overdrive to work in Auto.
It definitely worked in manual mode and it lowered the revs by approx. 500 rpm, give it a try

In auto you only ever see D light on, so you dont know what gear its in, though as its a CVT it doesnt have a Gear, in manual like the Mana I guess it just places the pulley at certain positions to simulate gears. I therefore believe in auto it is free to use the whole range including the range occupied by the OD option in manual. That's my guess anyway !!
