scooter problem

Hi Everyone

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me. For 3 years I have had no problems with my scoot but this morning it did not want to start, it was dead.
I last used it last Friday, I use it all year round Monday to Friday with the occasional run out at the weekend. Is it the battery

When I got home tonight I put a volt meter on it to check, it was showing 12v, so tried to start it while the meter was still attached, it dropped to just under 10v but no life from the scoot. I did get it going when I attached jump leads from the car, it started first time.

I am not mechanically minded so wouldn't know were to start if it is anything else.

What does the voltage drop too with the bike not running but the headlights on?

What does it drop too with it running with the head lights on?

With the head lights off and it revving to say 3000 what is the voltage reading?

Go for a quality Yuasa one, not a cheapy Rob Hunter Type...

or stator or reg\rect or poor conection somewhere on charging system.

a new battery will not fix these unless the poor conection is on a battery terminal

Jump start is again, check voltage across the battery with it running, it should read 14+ volts at about 3000rpm
Usually it is a battery, they do show 12volts but have no guts or cranking power. Some batteries can be brought back to life by giving it a good thrashing with a strong battery charger.

Thanks to all who gave input. It was the battery, bought a Westco (sealed) for £33 seems to be ok now.

That's good, but you won't know for sure that it was only the battery until you've run for a few days, in case the charging circuit is dodgy - good luck.
