Burgman 650 - Wheel refurb suggestions?

Post by Francley40 »

I’m looking to carry out a bit of a Spring refurb of my 2004 Burgman 650.
One part of the plan is a front fork overhaul but right now I’m wondering what can be done to freshen up the wheels without parting with too much cash.
The surface isn’t too bad but has gone the way of most/all Burgman wheels and they now look a bit untidy.
I guess an ultimate solution would be to powder coat and a local, good quality, company looks to want about £55 a wheel.
Does anyone have a decent alternative that might set me back a little less, please?
Many thanks,
Chris.

Cheapie option would be to prep and paint them yourself, but its a real p.i.t.a.

Wire brush attachment in a drill, wet 'n'dry sandpaper, and car wheel silver spray. You can do it over a hot weekend and don't have to send the wheels away.

Good Choice! :)
Trouble with spray painting it yourself is the paint will not be that hard, so fitting new tyres will be really difficult without taking the paint off.

I had mine done by a guy we use at work and it was a lot cheaper than that. If you PM me I will give you the details. They were done in near enough the original Silver Grey. Quality is excellent and I've had a few tyre changes with no problem at all. Don't forget that you will need to take the bearings out. Good time to replace them - with good quality ones ONLY!

Just as a rant - its disgusting the treatment we get given by Suzuki. Some get it done by the dealer some with Suzuki's approval. there's no real pattern to it. To be honest I was at the point of taking my dealer to small claims court over it. Mainly because he said I had been using it when salt was on the roads. This is a Bike with heated grips, a heated seat with adjustable windscreen. So a Summer use only Bike then? Even his staff thought it was a ludicrous position to take. But then I got a good price and the wheels were perfect again so I let it drop. What should happen is that we take action then use that judgement as a lever to get a proper response.

I do this sort of thing at work so I know what works.

Not wheel related but have you checked/replaced your stopper bolt, also may be worthwhile checking out the Polish upgrade for the Primary Spline. My K3 Primary Spline let go at 27.5k and I had to scrap the bike, this is a weakness in the K3/K4 design.

I took the powder coating route and the wheels look great now.
Hope it lasts.
Poldark: Stopper bolt ok, thanks. Sub-6k miles on the bike so can't justify £200? on the spline upgrade, really. Maybe next year....
