New Burgman Rider

Post by biker@59 »

Hi to all,
My name is Dave and have just joined Maxi-Muppets, after to many years than I care to remember on motorcycles and recently been told I have a medical condition of severe arthritis in knees hip and lower back and neck it was time to rethink my riding lifestyle I had a BMW K100 LT which was becoming to heavy for me, I briefly had a Burgman 400 a few years ago and it was a lot of fun so made sense to look for another one, I came across one via the swapz site, the guy owned a motorcycle shop down in Wales, it was a V reg, in red good condition MOT till July 2016, no marks or cracks, 30000 miles, givi rack and givi top box and givi steering lock, and heated grips, recent service and new brakes, new tyres, it arrived last Sunday he said the battery had got flat once since then was on a trickle charger, the next day I taxed it started fine ran fine went to a local town to get some new dust caps, was away from the Burgman for about 20 mins came back would not start, facing a long push home it was lucky that a local motorcycle dealer with a van was passing and for a price got me home, the battery was flat, I got a new one fitted it and it started up, ran fine took it for a run out to a local beach no problems had stopped for about 15 mins came back wouldn't start very slow turn over a few times, display (mileage trip distance) went blank, after about 6 goes it did fire up and at least I got home, tested battery was fine, but again wouldn't start, and has not started since, same thing turns over very slowly a few times display goes out then comes back on once you stop trying to turn it over have checked fuses have contacted the dealer does not want to know other than you bring scooter back as if I can 170 miles distance !! I would be grateful for any advice and thanks for reading this.

Hi to all,
My name is Dave and 59 years old and just joined Maxi-Muppets, been a biker more years than I care to remember recently been told had severe arthritis in knees spine back neck so riding my BMW K100LT was becoming difficult, briefly had a Burgman a few years back so seemed the ideal choice to still keep me on the road, came across a Burgman via a swapz site he was a motorcycle dealer in Wales it is a V reg in maroon, long MOT till July 2016, new tyres, brakes, serviced, givi rack and givi top box, along with a givi steering lock and heated grips, no marks or cracks, and had done 30000 miles good condition, he brought it up from Wales as I couldn't get there, it came last week, he did say the battery had gone flat once but since then he kept in on battery mate, next day the Monday I taxed it adjusted my insurance took her out filled up had a ride out ran fine, I stopped in a local town to get some dust caps been away from the bike about 20 mins came back wouldn't start, started pushing it back about 4 miles lay ahead, luckly a local motorcycle dealer in a van saw me and for a price took me and the bike home, the battery was flat, so bought a new one, couple of days later it came fitted it and started it, decided to take another run to the coast which was only 4-5 miles away again ran very well very nippy, stopped at beach for about 15 mins came back to Burgman wouldn't start turned over a few times display went out each time but didn't fire up, luckly at about the 6th go it did fire up s least got home, but since then wont start same thing turns over slowly display (mileage trip distance) goes blank looked at fuses all fine, contacted the bloke I got it from doesn't want to know other than bring scooter back yourself have your BMW back and due to being 170 miles away and no way I can get it there I am stuck with it so it might be something simple I just do not know, have no manual so any advice would be gratefully taken as I said it looks the part and when it does start it runs very well thanks for reading this.

Hi Dave, have you got a multi-meter? First thing to do is check if it's actually charging the battery.

Hi Dave - you really need to get to an auto electrician. It sounds to me as if you have something shorting to earth somewhere, draining off the current that should be charging your battery and flattening it whilst standing. Maybe a faulty ignition switch?

Welcome. May I suggest your solenoid. Had same problem on a scooter several years ago and replacing solenoid cured it. Also get your regulator checked. Cheers

Hi thanks for advice I think it could be the solenoid switch myself making a very loud clicking noise when trying to start it

Could be a regulator problem or worse a stator
