Those are impressive mileages for "Chinese" bikes that people tend to slate

Indeed, many people don't realize the Chinese companies manufacture good engines. In particular, Zongshen manufactures excellent engines. Several years ago China surpassed Japan as the country which manufactures the most motorcycles.
