tmax vs burgman 400 debate

I do about 6000 miles annually on the scoot, mostly london traffic. I change the oil/filter/etc myself but never tried brakes yet. I'm thinking of giving it a go next time around and see if i can make it a DIY item as well. I'm thinking that since most of my usage is commuting, spending less on stuff like filters/tyres that change quite often will add up to quite a lot in the end.

Well, that isn't a huge mileage - 1 service a year and 1 belt every 2 years on the Tmax, Burgman has a small 4000 and big 8000 mile service (I think!), so one or two of those each year. So its not the biggest deal in the world. If you were doing 15,000 a year, then these things would really matter!

Tmax: averaging 48mpg --> 130 miles per week --> 12.30lt fuel weekly
Burgman: possibly averages 75mpg --> same mileage --> 7.878lt fuel weekly

Monthly fuel cost at £1,29/lt at the moment
Tmax --> £63.468
Burgman --> £40.65

Annually:
Tmax --> £762
Burgman --> £488

Annual saving over fuel: £274 --> can go towards a belt service or even about 5+ oil changes (done DIY)

75mpg from a Burger 400 seems very optimistic to me, particularly commuting. Since your Tmax consumption is on the heavy side, I'd be very surprised if you got more than 60 from the Burger.

when I had my burger last year a k8 model I averaged 60-65mpg.

I got a 2011 Tmax with 6k on the clock last month and commute a mix of urban and motorway, approx 60 miles round trip and getting an average of 55mpg and I don't hang around.
I've only sat on a Burgman 400 and did like the cosy lower sitting position, excellent under-seat storage and ample weather protection from the screen and hand shields. I don't know know quick or stable it feels on the road compared to the Tmax. I'm loving the Tmax and do like the sporty feel and rasping sound of the exhaust compared to my previous Xmax but based on the pros I've mentioned I think I'd go for a Burgman next, just for the practicality and bit better economy (and the price).

I don't keep a regular check but the few times I did my 400 mpg was in the 80's. Lowest ever was 78.

The commuting thing is a good point, I see city traffic but I don't commute and my riding style is light on fuel but still...

You must be riding the tmax hard to get a return of only 48mpg or maybe there is something wrong with it.

I just done a run to the coast and back on my Mk1 tmax and it gave me 58mpg, gentle acceleration, hit all the speed limits, overtook all I came across. About 100 miles, but it is flat round here

You've said it all there...'gentle acceleration' !!! 'Hitting Speed limits'!!! Its easy to get decent fuel figures that way, but thats not the way some of us ride! If I go out with the IAM people we stick to limits mostly, and even I can get high 58s mpg. Normally its low 50s....

I've never ridden a 400 Burger, but I get the impression that are more of a touring scoot. The early ones at least didn't handle that well apparently - since the underlying engineering is rather basic, they had that hinged in the middle feeling. Personally, I suspect I would really miss the sharp handling and feel of the Tmax too much to really consider a 400 Burger - even if they are really comfortable, with loads of space and good weather protection. And of course, only 33bhp compared to the 45 or so of the TMax mk2-4.
