Well, I'm glad the gunges have worked for some people, but I've had too many failures....and if it fails with gunge in, you are totally screwed as you then can't put a temporary get you home plug in (well, you can, but it doesn't stay in for long!).

I use Ultraseal in my bikes.

Yeah...I think you need to be careful to use one of the 'live in the tyre' brands that is also used commercially. Such as Ultraseal. These are suitable for all tyres and vehicles and used by many of the big commercial fleets. These have a genuine and really high success rate unlike some of the off the shelf stuff you can buy at some dealers. Ultraseal has been around for over 45 years and is in my opinion the very best. I've never seen it fail.

If I'm not mistaken, the original Ultraseal is now called Puncturesafe after some 'difficulty' with someone manufacturing a similar but different 'same name' product elsewhere in the World.

Well I have!!! Which is why I stopped using it. I came to the conclusion that it was far more reliable to ring up the AA and let them put a plug in it...

It's a shame you've had that experience Grumpy. It makes me wonder what brand you were using and if it was dosed correctly. My bro in law had a rear wheel puncture on his XJR a few months ago, to his surprise, as he had instructed the dealer to put Slime in both wheels. The dealer had stupidly used one bottle for both wheels. That was entirely insufficient but sadly what many uninformed dealers seem to do and even some owners. Not saying that's what you did. But if you didn't use Ultraseal anyway, it may not work even if correctly dosed. Ultraseal is very precise about the amount you must use. Ultraseal is still available under the brand name of Ultraseal in the UK. It's imported from the states now.

Well, I used PunctureSeal which is allegedly the same stuff. Some bloke round here has a franchise for it and he put it in the last few times, so I presume he ought to have known what he was doing...

Ah...I think there's your problem! Correct me if I'm wrong but PunctureSeal is not Ultraseal. Ultraseal's business in the UK is taken care of by PunctureSafe as I understand it. Although you can still buy Ultraseal in the UK under it's own brand name, but that is imported from the States. I stick with Ultraseal. Ultraseal was used exclusively by the military (army & airforce) and police forces for the first 30 years of it's life, but was made available as a retail product in the early 2000's. Since then it's being used by increasing numbers of big commercial fleets all over 'Urop' and the States. In reality it is just the same as the Military stuff which is why it's so good and I've never known it to fail, ever. It literally bullet proofed our tyres in the army and it worked. It may be that PunctureSeal is similar to PunctureSafe and/or Ultraseal but I haven't research it and if it didn't work for you then I doubt it uses the same polymers and fibre technology. I've got to say I'm a bit 'anal' about tyre safety since many years ago I had a slow rear wheel puncture whilst riding for mile after mile on a motorway. In a straight line you often just don't detect a softening rear tyre until it's too late. In my case the bike was completely stable on the motorway until I took a sweeping exit road to take me onto another leg of another motorway and the whole bike just went out from under me at 60mph. I was lucky, I wasn't hurt. Since then I've always use Ultraseal and inspite of several punctures, mainly rear wheel, I've never had an unsuccessful Ultraseal repair.
