They wont it upsets ecu needs a stable voltage battery helps smooth it out even tho its generating over 12 v without battery its a bit rough .Even a carb engine with a basic cdi will crackle and pop if you ever let battery go really flat and have to jump start it with leads if you take leads off before battery has recovered it does the same happened to me on a couple of scoots .Hope you didnt knock too much off if it just needed a battery
