I would never buy 'manufacturer' parts anyway, to be honest, as there is always a massive mark up prices.

On enquiring about the service intervals they quoted £60 per hour (£50+vat) and 3 hours labour plus parts as the valves need checking every 2500 miles or if by the schedule every 6 months!! Making it quite expensive to run if you were to do this, and I wonder on a major warranty claim if Honda would quote this if you did not comply with their printed schedule?

My little rant.
On the plus side an out of warranty cheap second hand PCX will be very inexpensive to run because the valve adjusters are screw and locknut therefore a doddle to do yourself.
One thing it isn't though is quick on an open road.
62.5mph is all you'll get, less once the belt wears down a bit.
In town is where it shines, nice and nippy, brilliant handling and carves through the lines of cages like a hot knife through butter.

Surely, if you are applying that thinking, then it applies across the whole of the retail sector? Is this not just a case of supply and demand; ie, limited supply and a huge demand, which forces prices up, due to the supplier controlling the market.

True! I had jumped too 'deep' into the question "Why do we put up with it?". Yesterday was a long day!

My DCi 80 Clio is cheaper to run including road tax than my Burgman 400 no ifs butt's it's cheaper by a long way.
Clio service every 17000 miles or 2 years Burger every 3600, and the Burger service calls for tightening all
the chassis bolts every service, whats that about? a car mechanic would wet is self laughing.
No the other hand the car is no fun to drive and leans the wrong way on corners.
