I would be more inclined to pay the extra £400 for the new bike at a familiar dealer. You could also be confident about how it was 'run-in'.
The new top box and heated grips could be researched during the honeymoon period - which would only add to the bonding process! :D

So would I. And it must be worth a couple of hundred quid not to travel all the way down south.
Wigan Yamaha have 2012 model mk4's in at 8495. See if they'll give you a better deal on part chop??

Yes...a saving of only £400 isn't very enticing, so they'll have to do rather better. A £800 or so saving might be worth considering

Latest news is that dealer with the S/H one has upped his offer to £3K after I told him his previous offer wasn't good enough. I guess my next move is ask him to pay for delivery and collection of current one. So the difference between secondhand and new one is now £700, plus the cost of Topbox & heated grips on new one.....but this still isn't a huge difference, is it?

I personally would go with the new one, simply for peace of mind of the full manufacturers warranty.

OK...after spending days on the phone talking to various people about Tmaxs, and further negotiations with the people selling the secondhand one above, I've decided to buy it! In the end, it'll be £800 or so cheaper than buying a new one (once you got all the accessories on), and in my book £800 is a lot of money....well, it'll keep it serviced and in new tyres for a year or so! After all, its at most 6 months old, so will still have 18 months warranty. And as part of the deal, they are going to deliver it and collect the old one!

No idea! It depends on when the delivering people are coming up this way. Given that its still damned freezing and the roads are white with salt, there's no rush!
